A two-story open lobby complete with circular staircase is decorated in grandiose (albeit manly) fashion with heavy wooden furniture and ornate Navajo rugs. Massive vigas are adorned with mounted trophy animal heads.\u00a0 The walls on the upstairs portion of the lobby are embellished with autographed photos of the many stars who have spent the night at El Rancho.\u00a0 It could take hours to study all the movie memorabilia.<\/p>\n<p>When they weren&#8217;t sitting on horses, the movie stars ate, drank and slept at El Rancho&#8217;s expansive restaurant.\u00a0 Fittingly, that restaurant is called &#8220;The Silver Screen.&#8221;\u00a0 Movie stars imbibed adult beverages in large quantities at the adjacent 49ers Lounge. In 2006, <em>Esquire<\/em> magazine named the 49ers Lounge one of the top fifty bars in America, placing in elite company with big city bars in Chicago, New Orleans, San Francisco and New York City.\u00a0 According to the article, the lounge is &#8220;<em>both rough-hewn and rough around the edges. It doesn&#8217;t serve a lot of fancy cocktails, but it has great booze<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 455px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 455px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 455\/342;vertical-align: text-top; margin-top: 3px; margin-bottom: 3px; border: 4px solid black;\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.nmgastronome.com\/nm\/american\/Images\/ElRancho04.jpg\" alt=\"A combination plate\" width=\"455\" height=\"342\" align=\"middle\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">A combination plate Christmas style<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Silver Screen, El Rancho&#8217;s original ranch-style, full-service dining room is replete high ceilings, exposed wood beam trusses and rustic cowboy d\u00e9cor. According to El Rancho&#8217;s website, the Silver Screen takes an uncomplicated approach to familiar favorites with an emphasis on traditional Southwestern flavors. It\u2019s a fun, casual setting so you can dig in after a day of exploring National Monuments and Native Pueblos or get off on the right foot for a new day\u2019s adventures.<\/p>\n<p>The Silver Screen&#8217;s lunch menu includes several burgers and sandwiches all named for movie stars who dined on the premises.\u00a0 The Doris Day sandwich, for example, is a sirloin steak on French bread while the John Wayne burger includes guacamole. We&#8217;ve tried to figure out why some of those burgers were named for specific actors. The Ronald Reagan burger kinda sorta makes sense because it&#8217;s accompanied by jelly beans (Ronald Reagan once said about jelly beans, his favorite snack, &#8220;<em>you can tell a lot about a fellow&#8217;s character by whether he picks out all of one color or just grabs a handful<\/em>.&#8221;)\u00a0 It&#8217;s only appropriate that the burger named in his honor also includes a pill cup&#8217;s worth of jelly bellies of several varieties. though it certainly wasn&#8217;t named in tribute for his riveting performance in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bedtime_for_Bonzo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Bedtime for Bonzo<\/strong><\/a>.. Other burgers don&#8217;t seem to have a rhyme or reason behind their names.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 455px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 455px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 455\/342;vertical-align: text-top; margin-top: 3px; margin-bottom: 3px; border: 4px solid black;\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.nmgastronome.com\/nm\/american\/Images\/ElRancho05.jpg\" alt=\"The Ronald Reagan\" width=\"455\" height=\"342\" align=\"middle\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">The Ronald Reagan<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The dinner menu features traditional Old West favorites including several cuts of steak, prime rib, fried chicken, grilled salmon and some very good barbecue (likely the best item on the menu).\u00a0 New Mexican food is available for both lunch and dinner.\u00a0 Perhaps the best way to sample the restaurant&#8217;s New Mexican food is by ordering the <em><strong>Ricardo Montalban<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 Served piping hot, the plate includes two enchiladas, one taco, one roasted pork tamale, one bean and cheese tostada, shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, salsa and sour cream) .\u00a0 \u00a0It does not include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=uvyTTx33PPQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>rich Corinthian leather<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0 The tostada starts with a crispy shell slathered with a creamy guacamole then topped with lettuce, chopped tomatoes and Cheddar cheese.\u00a0 The star of this item is the guacamole which has the pronounced taste of fresh avocado. Once you get past the lettuce and tomatoes, the taco is quite good with well-seasoned beef.\u00a0\u00a0The enchilada is cheesy in and out then slathered with a cumin heavy red chile (or green if you prefer).\u00a0 The chile is of the mild variety with barely discernible heat.\u00a0 The beans are of the refried variety while the Spanish rice is tomato-based and slightly sweet.<\/p>\n<p><strong>9 August 2026<\/strong>:\u00a0 Another headscratcher that not even <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Marilyn_vos_Savant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Marilyn Vos Savant<\/strong><\/a> would be able to figure out is why the Silver Screen would name the only chimichanga on its menu for <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Desi_Arnaz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Desi Arnaz<\/strong><\/a>, the Cuban-American actor, musician, producer, and bandleader.\u00a0 First off, Cubans do not traditionally eat chimichangas.\u00a0 Second, this chimichanga is constructed on a large flour tortilla rolled with your choice of bean, beef or chicken, Cheddar and Asadero cheese, mole, shredded lettuce, diced tomato, avocado and cilantro-lime crema.\u00a0 Cubans do not traditionally eat mole either.\u00a0 As mole goes, this might best be described as a combination of barbecue sauce and <a href=\"https:\/\/store.505southwestern.com\/collections\/sauces\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>505 Southwestern&#8217;s<\/strong><\/a> fajita marinade (apparently no longer made).\u00a0 While some mole does have sweet notes (and not solely because chocolate is sometimes an ingredient), the Silver Screen mole was nearly cloying.\u00a0 That&#8217;s unfortunate because the cheese and beef were quite good.\u00a0 So were the whole pinto beans (though the &#8220;Spanish&#8221;
