{"id":14668,"date":"2012-01-29T21:21:00","date_gmt":"2012-01-30T03:21:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmgastronome.com\/?p=14668"},"modified":"2018-07-18T20:15:38","modified_gmt":"2018-07-19T02:15:38","slug":"marble-brewery-albuquerque-new-mexico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nmgastronome.com\/?p=14668","title":{"rendered":"Marble Brewery &#8211; Albuquerque, New Mexico"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<figure style=\"width: 465px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 465px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 465\/264;border: 4px solid black; margin-top: 3px; margin-bottom: 3px;\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.nmgastronome.com\/abq\/american\/Images\/Marble01.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"465\" height=\"264\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Marble Brewery on First Street just north of downtown<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">During a recent visit to <a title=\"The Grill\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nmgastronome.com\/?p=9188\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Grill<\/a> restaurant on Menaul, my friend and fellow culinary sensuist <a title=\"Larry McGoldrick Reviews The Grill\" href=\"http:\/\/www.abqtopten.com\/blog\/2011\/11\/25\/the-grill-was-grandpas-grill-on-route-66\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Larry McGoldrick<\/a> received a very warm greeting from proprietor Phil Chavez who mistook Larry for me (not that Phil wouldn&#8217;t otherwise have welcomed Larry warmly as he does all his guests).\u00a0 My good-natured friend didn&#8217;t return Phil&#8217;s warm welcome with a frosty retort as some people might have done.\u00a0 It was, after all, an honest case of mistaken identity.\u00a0 Larry and I are practically doppelgangers for one another&#8211;at least in terms of our passion for mom-and-pop restaurants throughout the Land of Enchantment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">In a karmic example of &#8220;turnabout is fair play,&#8221; my Kim and I were looking for a downtown area restaurant to visit whose doors we hadn&#8217;t previously darkened.\u00a0 When we espied the Marble Brewery on First Street, I commented, &#8220;Larry really likes this place.\u00a0 We should try it.&#8221;\u00a0 Another case of mistaken identity.\u00a0 The brewery Larry holds in such high regard is the <a title=\"Nexus Brewery\" href=\"http:\/\/www.abqtopten.com\/blog\/2011\/09\/23\/nexus-brewery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nexus Brewery<\/a> though we didn&#8217;t figure that out until perusing the Marble Brewery&#8217;s menu and not seeing any of the dishes Larry recommended so highly.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 465px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 465px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 465\/349;border: 4px solid black; margin-top: 3px; margin-bottom: 3px;\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.nmgastronome.com\/abq\/american\/Images\/Marble02.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"465\" height=\"349\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">The comfy confines of the Marble Brewery<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">Situated on the northwest intersection of Marble and First Streets, the Marble Brewery will never be mistaken for a restaurant which also happens to produce award-winning beers.\u00a0 It was never intended as such.\u00a0 Its stated mission is &#8220;<em>to provide bold, hand-crafted ales and lagers to New Mexico<\/em>.&#8221;\u00a0 Sounds simple enough, but the proof is in the imbibing. In 2010, <em>Draft Magazine<\/em> listed the Brewery&#8217;s &#8220;From the Wood&#8221; as one of the &#8220;top 25 beers of 2010.&#8221;\u00a0 That&#8217;s high praise for a brewery plying its craft only since 2008.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">The Brewery&#8217;s line-up includes seven house beers and a variety of seasonal draft and bottled beers, all self-distributed throughout the Albuquerque and Santa Fe areas.\u00a0 Distribution to other parts of the Land of Enchantment is handled by the National Distributing Company of New Mexico, a business partner.\u00a0 You&#8217;ll find Marble Brewery&#8217;s best on tap and in the bottle in hundreds of restaurants, bars and retail locations throughout New Mexico.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 465px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 465px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 465\/349;border: 4px solid black; margin-top: 3px; margin-bottom: 3px;\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.nmgastronome.com\/abq\/american\/Images\/Marble03.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"465\" height=\"349\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Chama Chili Texas-style chili made with cubes of sirloin simmered with pinto beans and red chile and served with homemade tortilla chips.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">The Marble Brewery is located in the former Starco Industrial Supply Building in the McClellan Park Industrial neighborhood.\u00a0 Among the visionaries who recognized the area&#8217;s potential as a re-purposed warehouse arts district and magnet for locals were the scions of Santa Fe entrepreneur Gerald Peters who also owns the Duke City&#8217;s <a title=\"Chama River Brewing Company\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nmgastronome.com\/?p=242\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chama River Brewing Company<\/a>.\u00a0 The Peters brothers oversaw the remarkable conversion of the 6,700-square-foot building circa 1950s.\u00a0 Few vestiges remain of its previous life.\u00a0 Instead you&#8217;ll find a welcoming pub with distressed wooden plank floors and an outdoor beer garden.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">Even though we found the Marble Brewery through a classic case of mistaken identity,\u00a0 dozens of patrons frequently make their\u00a0 to this popular watering hold&#8211;and not just locals.\u00a0 The <em>New York Times Travel Magazine<\/em> also managed to find the marble Brewery.\u00a0 In October, 2011, during <a title=\"New York Times Travel Magazine: 36 Hours in Albuquerque\" href=\"http:\/\/travel.nytimes.com\/2011\/10\/23\/travel\/36-hours-in-albuquerque.html?src=tp&amp;smid=fb-share&amp;utm_source=Golden+Crown&amp;utm_campaign=f78633a0b7-Extra_Extra_Read_All_About_it10_23_2011&amp;utm_medium=email\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">36 hours in Albuquerque<\/a>, the travel magazine described the brewery as &#8220;<em>a consummate New Mexican bar: benches, banjo players or salsa drummers, and lots of dogs<\/em> and advised visitors to &#8220;<em>rehydrate, after dancing, with a goblet of barrel-aged ale<\/em>.&#8221;\u00a0 In a February, 2012 post on her <a title=\"New Mexico Magazine: Tasting NM\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nmmagazine.com\/tastingnm\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tasting NM<\/a> blog, scintillating author Cheryl Jamison wrote about not having developed a taste for beer until a tasting event at Marble Brewery\u2019s Albuquerque headquarters &#8220;<em>shocked me with the number of their well-crafted beers that I found appealing.&#8221;\u00a0 <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 465px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 465px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 465\/349;border: 4px solid black; margin: 3px;\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.nmgastronome.com\/abq\/american\/Images\/Marble04.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"465\" height=\"349\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Turkey, Bacon and Green Chile Smoked turkey: Apple wood smoked bacon, cheddar and jack cheeses with green chile on sourdough bread.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">In a scant four years, the brewery has expanded its brewing capacity from 2,500 barrels a year to 10,000 barrels.\u00a0 The pub&#8217;s menu has not grown similarly, but as the online menu emphasizes, &#8220;<em>Marble Brewery is not a restaurant, as there is no kitchen on site. All of our food has been prepared by Chef Steven Shook at the Chama River Brewing Co. Feel free to bring your own food to enjoy here, we just ask that you clean up after yourself. Marble Brewery also affords our loyal clientele the liberty of ordering deliverable food from a number of quality restaurants located in the Downtown Albuquerque area. Ask your bartender for more information.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">One of the Chama River Brewing Company&#8217;s most popular appetizers, <em>Chama Chili<\/em> is but one of three &#8220;snacks&#8221; available on the pub menu.\u00a0 Along with the whopping total of three grilled sandwiches, it may not seem like a formidable menu, but then most patrons don&#8217;t visit the Marble Brewery for its food. Soft drink aficionados won&#8217;t find much variety either.\u00a0 The only soft drink available is IBC brand root beer.\u00a0 The Chama Chili isn&#8217;t our beloved piquant New Mexico-style chile (as in spelled correctly with an &#8220;e&#8221; at the end).\u00a0 It&#8217;s a Texas-style chili (there goes my spell-checker again) made with cubes of sirloin simmered with pinto beans and red chili served with homemade tortilla chips.\u00a0 As Texas-style chile goes, this is actually quite good.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 465px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 465px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 465\/322;border: 4px solid black; margin-top: 3px; margin-bottom: 3px;\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.nmgastronome.com\/abq\/american\/Images\/Marble05.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"465\" height=\"322\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Cuban: Pulled pork, ham, pickles and chipotle mayo on a telera roll.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">One good thing about a limited menu is that it won&#8217;t take you long to decide what you want to have.\u00a0 One very nice sandwich option is a <em>turkey, bacon and green chile smoked turkey<\/em> made with applewood smoked bacon, Cheddar and Jack cheeses with green chile on sourdough bread. Frankly it&#8217;s a better sandwich than you&#8217;ll find in many a sandwich shop. The green chile isn&#8217;t especially piquant as perhaps it should be for the quantity of melting cheese, but the blending of flavors and ingredients makes for a good pub-quality sandwich reminiscent of many of the sandwiches we had when we lived in England.
