Wellington Wimpy, a hamburger-loving mooch who would &#8220;gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today&#8221; (there&#8217;s got to be an analogy for the government there somewhere).\u00a0 Capitalizing on the fame and notoriety of the pusillanimous burger beggar, the Red Ball Cafe began serving &#8220;Wimpy Burgers&#8221; for five cents in the 1930s.\u00a0 It became one of the cafe&#8217;s trademarks, a &#8220;slider&#8221;-sized burger which included a secret red chile sauce (green chile cheeseburgers had surprisingly not yet been invented).\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">In 1937, Route 66 was rerouted and no longer traversed through the Barelas neighborhood.\u00a0 It forebode a period of decline not only for the Red Ball Cafe, but for the Barelas neighborhood.\u00a0 After World War II, there was a steep drop-off of business at the nearby railyards.\u00a0 Further decline transpired in the 1950s when odoriferous emanations from an area sewage treatment plant drove people away. Local, state and federal grants and tax breaks were offered to local risk-taking entrepreneurs willing to join in neighborhood rehabilitative efforts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">One of those entrepreneurs was Barelas born Jim Chavez who resurrected the Red Ball Cafe, opening its doors in March, 1998, nearly twenty years after its closure.\u00a0 A builder by trade, Chavez modernized the facility by adding such touches as air conditioning while maintaining many of the restaurant&#8217;s original touches.\u00a0 J. Wellington Wimpy and other characters from the Popeye strip continued to feature prominently on interior and exterior walls and signage.\u00a0 A painting of the Santuario de Chimayo in autumn festooned the foyer (it still does).\u00a0 Old-timers enjoyed seeing a painted red ball depicting 1942 prices such as the five cent Wimpy burger and the forty cent hamburger steak.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_50015\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-50015\" style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-50015 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 750px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 750\/480;border: 4px solid black; margin-top: 3px; margin-bottom: 3px;\" data-src=\"https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/RedBall14.jpg?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"480\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/RedBall14.jpg?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1 750w, https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/RedBall14-300x192.jpg?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1 300w, https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/RedBall14.jpg?size=128x82&lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1 128w, https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/RedBall14.jpg?size=384x246&lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1 384w, https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/RedBall14.jpg?size=512x328&lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1 512w, https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/RedBall14.jpg?size=640x410&lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1 640w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-50015\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chips and Salsa<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">Unfortunately, the Red Ball Cafe would shutter its doors anew in 2014.\u00a0 It would remain closed until September, 2018 when a former employee assumed day-to-day operational responsibilities.\u00a0 Not much has changed, not even hours of operation (7:30AM to 2PM) though breakfast is no longer served all day long.\u00a0 The menu has most of the familiar favorites that made it a community favorite.\u00a0 The real continuity, however, isn&#8217;t in everything that remained the same; it&#8217;s in the spirit of guests who live in the area and have always loved the Red Ball Cafe.\u00a0 I sat in personal space proximity to a table of twelve of them as they spiritedly discussed sports, politics, neighborhood gossip and the nostalgia of being back in their favorite cafe.\u00a0 One claimed to have coined the phrase &#8220;Burque&#8221; way back in 1977.\u00a0 Most of them ordered the Wimpy Burger.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\"><strong>17 October 2018<\/strong>: The Wimpy Burger is no longer just five cents as it was in 1942, but it&#8217;s still a bargain at just south of three dollars (fifty cents more if you want cheese).\u00a0 It&#8217;s a tad bigger than the White Castle slider to which it&#8217;s often compared.\u00a0 In fact, if memory serves me, it&#8217;s about the size of a McDonald&#8217;s single burger (which hasn&#8217;t crossed my lips since the 70s). Pairing staffers to sample burgers at forty different burger purveyors, their systematic testing methodology involved ordering two burgers at each restaurant: the specialty of the house and a basic cheese burger prepared at medium. The entire staff then got together and ate at the five restaurants garnering the highest ratings. With more than two-hundred burgers consumed, the fifth-place honoree as the Duke City\u2019s best burger was the Red Ball Cafe&#8217;s eponymous Red Ball Burger.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\"><strong>17 October 2018<\/strong>: In New Mexico, the true measure of a restaurant&#8217;s burger greatness is how good its green chile cheeseburger is. Offer a great one and everyone will know about it.\u00a0 The Red Ball Cafe&#8217;s <em><strong>green chile cheeseburger<\/strong> <\/em>has all the elements (six-ounce burger served on a sesame seed bun, lettuce, pickles, onions, tomatoes and green chile) to be a great one even though chile is misspelled (chili) throughout the menu.\u00a0 The sesame seed buns are nicely toasted.\u00a0 The six-ounce beef patty is hand-formed.\u00a0 Melted American cheese blankets the beef. The green chile had absolutely no bite&#8211;or about as much piquancy as a bell pepper. My server assured me the restaurant (and the Barelas neighborhood) prefers chile &#8220;extra hot&#8221; and that the same green chile cheeseburger has been known to bring buckets of sweat to diners&#8217; foreheads.\u00a0 Yep, the phenomenon of a meek and mild batch among more assertive chile struck again.\u00a0 Next time, I&#8217;ll ask to for a sample of the green chile first then even if it&#8217;s potently piquant, will ask for a double batch.\u00a0 Pain is a flavor this gastronome likes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">The Red Ball Cafe no longer offers a complimentary bowl of <em><strong>salsa and chips<\/strong><\/em>, but for a dollar it&#8217;s a bargain.\u00a0 By my fire-eater standards, the salsa isn&#8217;t particularly piquant, but it&#8217;s got notes of freshness and a balance of flavors between tomatoes and jalape\u00f1os.\u00a0 The chips are freshly made and are thick and low in salt.\u00a0 They&#8217;re formidable enough for Gil-sized scoops of salsa though the salsa&#8217;s thinness makes large scoops a challenge.\u00a0 You&#8217;ll finish the salsa long before you run out of chips.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">As I tend to do during our inaugural visit to a New Mexican restaurant, I asked whether or not cumin is used in the preparation of the restaurant&#8217;s chile.\u00a0 Our waitress&#8217;s derogatory comments about the malodorous qualities of cumin gave me assurances that the menu would be authentically New Mexican.\u00a0 That&#8217;s the way it&#8217;s always been at the Red Ball Cafe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">The Red Ball Cafe is a part of Albuquerque&#8217;s storied history.\u00a0 It&#8217;s great to have it back in the neighborhood which loves it so much.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\"><strong>Red Ball Cafe<\/strong><br \/>\n1303 South Fourth Street, S.W.<br \/>\n<strong>Albuquerque, New Mexico<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>LATEST VISIT<\/strong>: 17 October 2018<br \/>\n<strong># OF VISITS<\/strong>: 1<br \/>\n<strong>RATING<\/strong>: N\/R<br \/>\n<strong>COST<\/strong>: $$<br \/>\n<strong>BEST BET<\/strong>: Wimpy Burger, Green Chile Cheeseburger<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From Red Ball Cafe&#8217;s Facebook Page (28 December 2021): It is with extreme sadness and difficulty to announce \ufffcthe Red Ball Cafe has officially closed its doors for good\ud83d\ude22.
