Wrigley prevented local Greek restaurateur William &#8220;Billy Goat&#8221; Sianis and his pet goat Murphy from going through the turnstiles to watch game four of the Series.\u00a0 Legend has it that William cursed the Cubs with the prophetic statement &#8220;The Cubs ain&#8217;t gonna win no more.\u00a0 The Cubs will never win a World Series so long as the goat is not allowed in Wrigley Field.&#8221;\u00a0 Not only did the Cubs go on to lose game four and the subsequent games in the Series, they haven&#8217;t experienced success since.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 320px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 320px; font-family: Verdana;\">You might think that such an outcry of anger and disapproval over William and his restaurant would have ensued that William would have been forced out of business, but since that day of infamy, most rancor seems to be directed at the Cubs organization.\u00a0 William&#8217;s Billy Goat Tavern has not only been a Chicago institution since 1934, it&#8217;s earned worldwide fame&#8230;and it&#8217;s done so despite serving food which, at best, be described as mediocre.\u00a0 The Billy Goat Tavern is not a dining destination.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not where any self-respecting gastronome would ever go expecting a great gourmet meal.\u00a0 We visit because of the experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">We visit to experience for ourselves, the famous Saturday Night Live skit (back when SNL was funny) executed so uproariously funny by the &#8220;Not Ready for Prime Time Players&#8221; \u00a0 John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray and Loraine Newman.\u00a0 The hilarious skit was based on the Billy Goat Tavern, a hang-out for many of the show&#8217;s writers.\u00a0 It satirized the experience of dining at the restaurant where it doesn&#8217;t matter what you order, the colorful waitstaff will call out &#8220;<em>cheezborger; no fries, cheeps; no Pepsi, Coke<\/em>.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 465px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 465px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 465\/297;border: 4px solid black; margin-top: 3px; margin-bottom: 3px;\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.nmgastronome.com\/usa\/burgers\/Images\/BillyGoat05.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"465\" height=\"297\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">The bar and dining room area at the Billy Goat Tavern<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">Today, the thickly accented Greek wait staff continues to entertain guests just as William Sianis did all those years:\u00a0 &#8220;<em>Try the double cheese!\u00a0 It&#8217;s the best!\u00a0 No fries, cheeps<\/em>!&#8221;\u00a0 It&#8217;s part of the restaurant&#8217;s charm.\u00a0 It&#8217;s why we return.\u00a0 This type of wait schtick just doesn&#8217;t get old.\u00a0 The entertaining wait staff is just one of the things we love about the Billy Goat Tavern.\u00a0 We love that the restaurant isn&#8217;t at street level, but directly below Michigan Avenue on the Magnificent Mile.\u00a0 We love the homey hang-out feel of the joint where regulars belly up to the bar and grin with amusement as tourists snap photo after photo of their home away from home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">Cheeseburgers are the Billy Goat Tavern&#8217;s featured fare, some would say the only thing to eat.\u00a0 While the menu may list other items, including a few sandwiches, order something other than a cheezborger and you&#8217;ll incur the ire of the counterman who will admonish you: &#8220;<em>Cheezborger!\u00a0 Double cheez!\u00a0 That&#8217;s the best<\/em>!&#8221;\u00a0 I won&#8217;t advise ordering two double cheez.\u00a0 They just aren&#8217;t very good.\u00a0 Not only are the beef patties waifishly thin, they&#8217;re desiccated, maybe the driest burgers I&#8217;ve ever had.\u00a0 Worse, they&#8217;re served on a very dry Kaiser roll.\u00a0 You add your own pickles, onions, mustard and ketchup at a condiment bar.\u00a0 Trust me, you&#8217;ll need a lot of ingredients to make the burger palatable.\u00a0 The cheeps, made by Vitner&#8217;s, a Chicago staple, are very good.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 465px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 465px; Coke, no Pepsi<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">Visitors to the Billy Goat Tavern are fully cognizant that they&#8217;re not going to be treated to a gourmet meal, but we still visit in droves.
