The wine selection is reputed to be quite good.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">Ironically when Geezamboni&#8217;s first opened, barbecue wasn&#8217;t even on the restaurant&#8217;s menu as Nellos endeavored a departure from the family&#8217;s barbecue tradition. \u00a0Though often prompted to serve barbecue, it wasn&#8217;t until Al Unser of Albuquerque&#8217;s famous racing family provided the impetus (a small donation) for a barbecue pit to be built that the course of history would be altered, many would say for the better. \u00a0Today, barbecue is the restaurant&#8217;s most popular draw, but certainly not the only one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">Johndhi&#8217;s diverse menu has something for everyone including sandwiches for which Dagwood Bumstead would risk life and limb. \u00a0Sandwich options include gyros, the popular Greek sandwich constructed of a lamb and beef amalgam, tomatoes, onions and tzatziki sauce. \u00a0Nellos also honors his Greek heritage with Greek style chicken, hummus and pita and dolmas (stuffed grape leaves).\u00a0\u00a0Other sandwich fillers include a seven-ounce top sirloin steak, a catfish filet, a grilled Reuben, a pastrami sandwich and even a Philly cheesesteak sandwich. \u00a0Of course, barbecue pork, link, beef and chicken sandwiches are featured fare. \u00a0Vegetarian sandwich options include a tortilla-based hummus wrap replete with fresh vegetables.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4490\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4490\" style=\"width: 309px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4490 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 309px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 309\/430;margin-top: 3px; margin-bottom: 3px; border: 4px solid black;\" data-src=\"https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2005\/05\/johndi02-735x1024.jpg?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1\" alt=\"The 2009 Souperbowl Award Winning Trophy\" width=\"309\" height=\"430\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2005\/05\/johndi02-735x1024.jpg?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1 735w, https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2005\/05\/johndi02-215x300.jpg?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1 215w, https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2005\/05\/johndi02.jpg?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1 2022w, https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2005\/05\/johndi02.jpg?size=128x178&lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1 128w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 309px) 100vw, 309px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4490\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">The 2009 Souperbowl Award Winning Trophy<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">A variety of burgers is also available, including one of the very best blue cheese embellished burgers in the Duke City. \u00a0The dinner menu is indicative of the kitchen&#8217;s culinary talent. \u00a0Beef eaters favor the New York strip steak while seafood lovers esteem the smoke salmon most. \u00a0No meal would be complete without dessert and Johndhi&#8217;s is highly regarded in this gastronomic aspect as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">What may surprise even the most savvy diners is the number of accolades earned by the restaurant, many not in the arena of barbecue. \u00a0In 2009, Johndhi&#8217;s earned the critic&#8217;s choice award during the 2009 <a title=\"The Souper Bowl\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nmgastronome.com\/?p=2437\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Souper Bowl<\/a> in which I had the privilege of serving as a judge. \u00a0Johndhi&#8217;s entry in that hallowed competition was a gazpacho soup, a long-time favorite, particular in the summer. \u00a0This Spanish soup (generally made of\u00a0chopped tomatoes, onions, cucumbers, peppers and herbs)\u00a0is served cold but is refreshing any time of year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">Summertime at Johndhi&#8217;s means dining on the patio. \u00a0The outdoor dining area remains surprisingly comfortable even in balmy summer thanks to an ingenious outdoor &#8220;swamp cooler&#8221; which is more akin to a mist generating pipe. Several trees add functionality with shade and esthetics with their greenery. \u00a0The black steel smoker from which magic smoke emanates is another reason the patio is preferred seating as is the live music featured on occasion. <\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4493\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4493\" style=\"width: 444px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4493 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 444px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 444\/333;margin-top: 3px; margin-bottom: 3px; border: 4px solid black;\" data-src=\"https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2005\/05\/johndi04.jpg?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1\" alt=\"Brisket Sandwich with fries\" width=\"444\" height=\"333\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 444px) 100vw, 444px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4493\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Brisket Sandwich with fries<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">Other award-winning items include\u00a0some of the best (and at times, most wonderfully piquant) <em>green chile stew<\/em> in town, far better than the green chile stew that helped made the <a title=\"The Frontier Restaurant\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nmgastronome.com\/?p=277\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Frontier Restaurant<\/a> famous. With some entrees you also receive a sensational <em>salsa<\/em> with fresh, chopped up, not pulverized ingredients. It&#8217;s some of the best salsa in town, several years ago having earned &#8220;best salsa&#8221; in the Duke City honors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">Johndhi&#8217;s is full of pleasant surprises. \u00a0During one memorable visit, my Kim and I shared a memorable <em>almond orange salad<\/em> which featured various greens, honey roasted almond slivers and tiny orange slices bathed in a tangy citrus dressing good enough to drink. \u00a0With all there is to like about Johndhi&#8217;s, what may surprise you most is how little I regard the barbecue itself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">For a start, it&#8217;s better than the &#8216;cue served at Quarters, but there are similarities to the dynastic Nellos family barbecue. \u00a0Similar to Quarters the sauce is far too generously applied to your meat orders, the differences being that Johndhi&#8217;s version is thicker and even more pronounced in its tanginess, sweetness and piquancy. The BBQ spare rib sandwich is served open-faced while the chicken BBQ style (a boneless chicken breast) is served on a bun. \u00a0It may not matter as my experience has shown the least messy way to consume these sandwiches is sans bread. \u00a0That&#8217;s attributable to the surfeit of sauce. <\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">The <em>smoked brisket<\/em> sandwich, when light on the sauce, is quite good. \u00a0The brisket is tender and moist with a pronounced smokiness. \u00a0A sandwich I won&#8217;t order again is the &#8220;<em>Missing Link<\/em>&#8221; in which several spicy pork links are topped with a tangle of onions and gloppy, sloppy, melted Cheddar cheese. \u00a0While the links are also quite good, the onions and cheese subtract from the experience&#8211;and of course, there&#8217;s the sauce in which the entire sandwich swims (pictured above.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">Sandwiches are served with your choice of fat fries, homemade potato salad, baked beans or coleslaw and pickle on request. \u00a0The fries are indeed fat, big Texas sized fries we use to sop up surplus sauce. \u00a0The baked beans are very good, some of the best in the city.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4495\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4495\" style=\"width: 444px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4495 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 444px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 444\/264;margin-top: 3px; margin-bottom: 3px; border: 4px solid black;\" data-src=\"https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2005\/05\/johndi06.jpg?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1\" alt=\"Key Lime Pie at Johndi's\" width=\"444\" height=\"264\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2005\/05\/johndi06.jpg?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1 444w, https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2005\/05\/johndi06-300x178.jpg?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1 300w, https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2005\/05\/johndi06.jpg?size=128x76&lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1 128w, https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2005\/05\/johndi06.jpg?size=384x228&lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1 384w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 444px) 100vw, 444px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4495\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Key Lime Pie at Johndi&#8217;s<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">Burgers are hand-formed from fresh ground chuck steak and are garnished with your choice of ingredients. These bountiful beauties include such innovative options as a Hawaiian burger with grilled pineapple rings, a mushroom burger and of course, the ubiquitous New Mexico favorite, the green chile cheeseburger. \u00a0The ground chuck steak provides the marbling that gives each burger the requisite juiciness burgerphiles love. \u00a0My favorite is the <em>blue burger<\/em> which is loaded with blue cheese. \u00a0It&#8217;s a superb burger. Ask for it with green chile and it&#8217;s even better thanks to a piquant chile that bites back. <\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">Desserts include a refreshing <em>key lime pie<\/em> which will purse your lips with its tanginess. \u00a0It&#8217;s not quite big enough to share which you probably wouldn&#8217;t want to do anyway.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">Lest I forget, there&#8217;s something else about Johndhi&#8217;s I admire, not as a gastronome, but as a lexicologist. \u00a0The menu is replete with clever slogans: &#8220;Home of the Barbecue Profit \u2013 Johndhi.&#8221; \u00a0&#8220;We&#8217;ve been smokin&#8217; the good stuff for years.&#8221; &#8220;Hip shakin&#8217;, Lip smackin&#8217;, Finger Suckin&#8217; Barbecue.&#8221; That&#8217;s good stuff!
