font-family: Verdana;\">Las Ma\u00f1anitas, the traditional Mexican birthday song often sung in Catholic churches and birthday parties is one of my very favorite songs of any genre.\u00a0 <span class=\"text\">It offers the recipient a good-morning wish just as King David himself might have. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">During early summer days when Duke City diners feel like serenading their taste buds with New Mexican food, many head to Las Ma\u00f1anitas just north of Old Town.\u00a0 There they dine on a brick patio under towering cottonwoods and a canvas of blue provided by New Mexico&#8217;s incomparable skies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">The sprawling adobe restaurant is a historic landmark with a colorful history.\u00a0 Parts of the structure date back more than 300 years.\u00a0 It has served as a stagecoach stop, saloon and brothel as well as a private residence.\u00a0 It was once owned by one of the Duke City&#8217;s most popular and lively mayors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">Las Ma\u00f1anitas is said to be haunted with several paranatural occurrences having been documented over the years.\u00a0 In fact, the Southwest Ghost Hunters Association (SGHA) conducted an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sgha.net\/lasmananitas.html\">investigation<\/a> of the premises in 2004.\u00a0 The ghostly apparitions are, fortunately, not malevolent. <\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 455px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 455px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 455\/342;vertical-align: text-top; margin-top: 3px; margin-bottom: 3px; border: 4px solid black;\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.nmgastronome.com\/abq\/newmexican\/images\/Mananitas02.jpg\" alt=\"The interior of Las Mananitas\" width=\"455\" height=\"342\" align=\"middle\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">The interior of Las Mananitas<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">The charming edifice includes a myriad of dining rooms, most with doorways befitting much shorter citizenry than my six-foot-one stature.\u00a0 Uneven brick floors, slanted stuccoed walls of various colors and eclectic Southwestern art work catch your eye at every turn.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">Massive painted vigas, nichos and kiva fireplaces add to the restaurant&#8217;s allure while equipales style furniture (crafted from fibrous materials removed from maguey cactus and fixed with leather bands) provides comfortable seating. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">Among the eleven rooms are some of the nicest restrooms of any\u00a0restaurant in Albuquerque with multi-hued Talavera tiles throughout. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">The wait staff is very friendly and accommodating which somewhat makes up for the restaurant&#8217;s parsimonious policies&#8211;such as not offering complementary salsa and chips and charging extra for refills.\u00a0 Ask for extra lemon slices for your tea and you might be charged for each one (at least that&#8217;s been my past experience).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">These are the little things that sometimes make the difference between a great dining experience and one you might not want to repeat in the near future.\u00a0 My most recent visit to Las Ma\u00f1anitas was with a friend, a Comptroller by profession.\u00a0 Take a Comptroller to lunch and you&#8217;ll likely get a unique cost-analysis of the restaurant&#8217;s business model.\u00a0 Such was my experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 356px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 356px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 356\/292;vertical-align: text-top; margin-top: 3px; margin-bottom: 3px; border: 4px solid black;\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.nmgastronome.com\/abq\/newmexican\/images\/Mananitas03.jpg\" alt=\"Complementary posole\" width=\"356\" height=\"292\" align=\"middle\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Complementary posole<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">My friend was pleased that complementary posole was brought to our table, but<\/span> dismayed at the miniscule portion (about half a cupful) and the absence of pork (one or two pieces per serving) in the dish.\u00a0 The posole might be good enough to tempt diners into ordering the full-portion bowl, but that&#8217;s not a given.\u00a0 Some diners might be more upset than happy at the smallish portion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">Visit during the noontime hour and you can order from either the breakfast or lunch menus.\u00a0 The only place in which you will find carne adovada and other typical lunch offerings is in the dinner and breakfast menus.\u00a0 Dinner offerings are in the range of ten dollars and include beans, rice and a sopaipilla. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">The <em>green chile stew<\/em>, which includes cubed potatoes and beans is quite good.\u00a0 It is served steaming warm and generates a bit more heat thanks to a nice piquant bite.\u00a0 Along with the posole (order the bowl), it is one of the restaurant&#8217;s best offerings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">In past visits, my observation has been that there are oceans with less salt than some of the entrees at Las Ma\u00f1anitas and at least with oceans, there&#8217;s a desalination process.\u00a0 That did not seem to be the case at all during my most recent visit in March, 2008. <\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 442px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 442px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 442\/317;vertical-align: text-top; margin-top: 3px; margin-bottom: 3px; border: 4px solid black;\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.nmgastronome.com\/abq\/newmexican\/images\/Mananitas04.jpg\" alt=\"Blue corn enchiladas with carne adovada\" width=\"442\" height=\"317\" align=\"middle\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Blue corn enchiladas with carne adovada<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">My Comptroller friend Ruben is in a quest to make the best carne adovada he can.\u00a0 To that end, he&#8217;s been visiting some of the city&#8217;s best purveyors of porcine perfection.\u00a0 Las Ma\u00f1anitas had been recommended to him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">A dinner platter of <em>blue corn tortilla<\/em> <em>enchiladas<\/em> with carne adovada was evenly seasoned, however, detracting from the red chile&#8217;s flavor was the fact that the skin from the red chile pods and extraneous seeds weren&#8217;t removed (as apparent in the image below). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">To be fair, the restaurant&#8217;s carne adovada has several redeeming qualities.\u00a0 For one, the pork is fork tender, moist and delicious.\u00a0 It is cubed in smaller pieces than at other restaurants, but that really makes it easier to pick up with your fork. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">Both the enchiladas and accompanying beans are topped with white and yellow cheeses and served with a garnish of lettuce, tomato and olives.\u00a0 The beans are very good, a nice complement to the enchiladas while the Spanish rice is fairly typical. <\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 437px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 437px; font-family: Verdana;\">The sopaipillas accompanying the dinner platters are thicker than they are puffy, but they serve as perfect vessels for either honey or the savory component of your meal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">If I was a ghost, I&#8217;d probably want to hang around a restaurant for eternity, too, but it wouldn&#8217;t be at Las Ma\u00f1anitas.\u00a0 Still, there are many things to like about this restaurant and they&#8217;re not limited to the homey ambience and cottonwood canopy. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">My Comptroller friend may not have been enamored of the portions, extra costs and &#8220;dirty&#8221; adovada, but I know several people who swear by the food and who don&#8217;t mind the extra charges on their bill. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;
