It\u2019s Like A Whole Other Country.\u201d <\/em>That slogan, conceived by the Texas Tourism Department, appeared on television commercials, billboards, advertisements and even license plates. It was such a hit that the Texas Department of Transportation obtained seven federal trademark registrations to protect it on everything from stickers to shot glasses. In 2014, <em>USA Today<\/em> readers declared it the<em> \u201c<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.10best.com\/awards\/travel\/best-state-slogan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>best of all state slogans<\/strong><\/a><em>,\u201d <\/em>edging out<em> Virginia Is For Lovers\u201d <\/em>and <em>\u201cKentucky Unbridled Spirit.\u201d <\/em>New Mexico\u2019s sacrosanct<em> \u201cLand of Enchantment\u201d <\/em>slogan ranked fifth<em>.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">Visit Artesia, New Mexico and you might just wonder if you didn\u2019t accidentally cross over into that whole other country. As with much of Southeast New Mexico, the scrub-brushed topography closely resembles that of West Texas. It\u2019s a different type of enchanted terrain haughty New Mexicans along the Rio Grande corridor picture as representing the entire state. Then there are the large old west bronze statues depicting cowboys and oil drillers, imagery often associated with the Lone Star State. Any image association exercise involving Texas would also include trucks, barbecue and football. Had it been football season, many of those trucks would probably have been stationed at Bulldog Bowl, the pristine stadium in which the Artesia Bulldogs reign supreme. Proudly and prominently displayed on the front window of Henry\u2019s is a poster celebrating the Bulldogs thirty state football championships since 1957. Another poster depicts the town\u2019s divided loyalty between Texas Longhorn fans and those who support the Oklahoma Sooners where former Artesia (and Pittsburgh Steelers) quarterback Landry Jones made Friday night lights brighter. There are probably some closeted UNM Lobo and NMSU Aggie fans in Artesia, but we didn\u2019t see any.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">Emblazoned on the west side of Henry\u2019s is a muscular bulldog sporting a spiked collar and standing atop the restaurant\u2019s motto \u201cHenry\u2019s: Dog Gone Good.\u201d With the multitude of reminders throughout town extolling Artesia and the Bulldogs, you would think the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbqsuperstars.com\/cooking-channel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BBQ Superstars Cooking Channel<\/a><\/strong> would have learned the name of the town (the host even called it Azuza). Then again, he also raved that on a scale of A to Z, Henry\u2019s BBQ warranted an A+.\u00a0 You won&#8217;t get any argument from the throngs of Artesians who frequent it for their barbecue fix.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_51229\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-51229\" style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-51229 size-full lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 750px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 750\/581;border: 4px solid black; margin-top: 3px; margin-bottom: 3px;\" data-src=\"https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Henry03.gif?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"581\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-51229\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Turkey, Chicken, Green Beans, Buttered Corn, Bread Roll<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">Henry&#8217;s is named for John Henry, a local from a restaurant background though not in barbecue.\u00a0 John launched Henry&#8217;s in 2009.\u00a0 He does all the cooking and of course, is the premier smoke master, practicing the low-and-slow arts on a high-capacity Southern Pride smoker.\u00a0 Brisket and ribs are smoked for 12 hours.\u00a0 Apple wood, acquired from Runyan&#8217;s Farms just outside of Artesia, is the wood of choice.\u00a0 Henry&#8217;s uses a multi-ingredient dry rub on all its meats; sauce isn&#8217;t mopped on before or during the smoking process.\u00a0 Feel free to add your own sauce later.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a good, smoky sauce with sweet-tangy notes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">In addition to ribs and brisket, Henry&#8217;s offers pulled pork, smoked chicken, smoked Black Oak brand sausage, beef ribs and chicken wings.\u00a0 Sides are also plentiful: macaroni n&#8217; cheese, green beans, loaded potatoes with cheese and bacon, smoked new potatoes, sweet corn, baked beans and more.
