I feel good, I knew that I would, now <\/em><br \/>\n<em>I feel good, I knew that I would <\/em><br \/>\n<em>So good, so good, &#8217;cause I got you <\/em><br \/>\n<em>So good, so good, &#8217;cause I got you <\/em><br \/>\n<em>So good, so good, &#8217;cause I got you<\/em>.&#8221;<br \/>\n~<strong>James Brown<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">The lyrics to the &#8220;Godfather of Soul&#8217;s&#8221; signature song aren&#8217;t etched on the windows or door of The Feel Good, but several other thematic aphorism are.\u00a0 There&#8217;s Virginia Wolf&#8217;s quote, &#8220;<em>One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well<\/em>.&#8221;\u00a0 M.F.K. Fisher&#8217;s &#8220;<em>Sharing food with another human being is an ultimate act that should not be indulged in lightly<\/em>&#8221; is etched on the door while Alan D. Wolfelt&#8217;s sage &#8220;<em>Food is symbolic of love when words are inadequate<\/em>&#8221; occupies another window.\u00a0 Maybe because it&#8217;s a shorter quote, James Beard&#8217;s &#8220;<em>Food is our common ground.\u00a0 A universal experience<\/em>.&#8221; occupies a small window.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">One quote which perhaps should be etched on The Feel Good is San Francisco-based journalist Madison Park&#8217;s &#8220;<em>Having a belly stuffed with comforting food can feel like a warm hug from the inside<\/em>.&#8221;\u00a0 In a 2010 article for CNN, Park explained why eating a lot feels so darn good.\u00a0 You might be surprised that the reasons are more about evolution and survival than they are about (gasp&#8230;blasphemy) great cooking, superb ingredients and plenitude of portion.\u00a0\u00a0 &#8220;<em>Evolution<\/em>,&#8221; Park explains &#8220;<em>has given us the instinct to eat a lot every time we can, preparing for hard times.\u00a0 It&#8217;s the drive to survive, like puffy-cheeked squirrels storing up for winter. It made for interesting banter between the owner and patrons who weren\u2019t like-minded.\u00a0 Several other tenants have occupied the space since 2009, but none have provided such a dramatic departure from the Malt Shop&#8217;s Route 66 nostalgia theme as has The Feel Good.\u00a0 The 900-square-foot space is bright and airy with a sophisticated and intimate feel.\u00a0 In some ways, it&#8217;s both a continuation and a departure from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nmgastronome.com\/?p=49948\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Modern General<\/strong><\/a>, its sister next door and even moreso from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nmgastronome.com\/?p=9546\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Vinaigrette<\/strong><\/a>, Erin&#8217;s inaugural Duke City venture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">Befitting the cozy space is a rather limited menu which bespeaks of elevated tradition.\u00a0 This stuff all sounds familiar, but has little loving touches you could imagine a doting grandma adding.\u00a0 Fried basil and Parmesan toasties on the tomato soup, for example.\u00a0 Both the &#8220;luncheon&#8221; and &#8220;supper&#8221; menus offer a soiree of soups, the grandma-approved cure-all. \u00a0 And yes, you did read &#8220;supper.&#8221;\u00a0 Doesn&#8217;t supper sound just a bit more homey and familial than dinner?\u00a0 The terms, by the way <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rd.com\/culture\/difference-between-dinner-and-supper\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">aren&#8217;t synonymous<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0 My inaugural meal at The Feel Good was over lunch&#8230;er, luncheon where a menu of soups, tarts and tartines, sandwiches, &#8220;other fine snacks&#8221; font-family: Verdana;\">Legendary Green Bay Packers coach Vince Lombardi stressed &#8220;<em>Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence<\/em>.&#8221;\u00a0 Don&#8217;t tell Erin Wade there&#8217;s no such thing as perfection.\u00a0 She even used that descriptor on one of the sides and after a couple of them, you might actually be persuaded these <em><strong>perfect potato chips<\/strong><\/em> earn their sobriquet.\u00a0 They&#8217;re waifishly thin, crispy and delightfully salty with none of the annoying &#8220;bottom of the bag&#8221; crumbs you find in store-bought chips.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">These chips are even better with a side of <em><strong>tuna-avocado poke<\/strong><\/em> (check out the close-up in the June edition of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nmgastronome.com\/?p=45137\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Red or Green<\/strong><\/a>).\u00a0\u00a0 The chips are formidable enough to scoop up the poke (small chunks of fresh, pinkish tuna; creamy avocado, tomatoes and green peppers studded with black sesame seeds ).\u00a0 It&#8217;s a combination as good as any chips-dip pairing you can name.\u00a0 While The Feel Good may take pride in being &#8220;tradition-driven, not chef-driven,&#8221; They complement and balance one another&#8211;the steaming fragrance of creamy soup a prelude to its swoon-worthy deliciousness; the melty, oozy food-porn quality green cheese with lightly toasted bread.\u00a0 It&#8217;s no wonder the Barefoot Contessa Ina Garten calls the combination of <em><strong>tomato soup and grilled cheese<\/strong><\/em> &#8220;the ultimate comfort food meal.&#8221;\u00a0 The Feel Good&#8217;s grilled cheese is a triumvirate of terrific cheeses: Cheddar, Jack and Comte on baked sourdough from the Modern General bakery. It&#8217;s relatively unadorned compared to some of the creative, everything-but-the-kitchen-sink grilled cheese sandwiches currently popular.\u00a0\u00a0 Take the crusty sourdough on a swim in the mug of tomato soup.\u00a0 It&#8217;ll leave you satisfied and make you feel good&#8230;very good!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">There&#8217;s no way the stylish and classy Erin Wade would serve chicken in a bucket even though &#8220;a bucket&#8221; and &#8220;big bucket (feeds 4)&#8221; are listed on the menu as fried chicken options. \u00a0Our &#8220;bucket&#8221; (eight pieces) was arrayed beautifully in a serving platter much like one my mom used. \u00a0Eight glorious pieces cover virtually the entire platter. \u00a0This is not fast food chicken served from a heating tray. \u00a0This is the type of chicken for which the\u00a0proverb \u201call things come to those who wait\u201d is apropos. \u00a0This is fried chicken prepared lovingly the way someone&#8217;s mother (likely Erin&#8217;s) would have prepared it for her family for Sunday dinner (and\/or supper). \u00a0It arrives molten hot at your table so your first bite will unleash a small geyser of deliciousness. \u00a0Seasoned with rosemary, it&#8217;s got just a hint of the pine-lemon fragrance and flavor for which rosemary is known. \u00a0A rather thickly coated skin gives way to moist, tender, perfectly prepared poultry as good as you&#8217;ll find in Albuquerque (especially now that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nmgastronome.com\/?p=56699\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Ms. Gennie&#8217;s<\/strong><\/a> has closed down)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\"><strong>13 May 2022<\/strong>: In addition to ordering &#8220;buckets&#8221; of fried chicken, you can also order &#8220;a couple pieces.&#8221; Bucket aficionados will probably want to order one of two fixin&#8217;s options. \u00a0You&#8217;ll have a heckuva time deciding which one to order. \u00a0There&#8217;s green bean pickles, biscuits and jam OR mashers and gravy with coleslaw. \u00a0Kentucky Fried Chicken may have made mashed potatoes and gravy with coleslaw practically de rigueur, but we certainly didn&#8217;t want any more associations with bucketed food we don&#8217;t like. \u00a0Besides, the green bean pickles and biscuits and jam are terrific. \u00a0Maybe the green bean pickles should be renamed pickled green beans because that&#8217;s what they are. \u00a0They&#8217;re also superb with pronounced notes of cloves with their intense flavor and aroma. \u00a0The biscuits and jam are also excellent though we didn&#8217;t get nearly enough raspberry jam. \u00a0A pint or so would have been nice.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_60648\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-60648\" style=\"width: 525px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-60648 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 525px; font-family: Verdana;\"><strong>13 May 2022<\/strong>: There are four desserts on the menu. \u00a0Characteristic of an Erin Wade restaurant, they&#8217;re all the type of dessert your grandmother may have served you (or should have). \u00a0<em><strong>Mom&#8217;s chocolate birthday cake<\/strong><\/em> with chocolate buttercream frosting and a ganache filling was my Kim&#8217;s choice. \u00a0Characteristic of our Mars-Venus dynamic, she could eat a cake&#8217;s worth of frosting, especially if it&#8217;s buttercream. \u00a0Her husband, who&#8217;s not nearly as sweet, prefers only the part that isn&#8217;t frosted (unless the frosting is as strong as coffee). \u00a0She loved Mom&#8217;s chocolate birthday cake especially since she could enjoy all that frosting. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">The other dessert options are cobbler (served hot or cold with a side of whip for a pittance), lemon tart and macerated berries and cream.
