Hincks<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Author: Verbs in Storyland<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Why is it the term &#8220;city limits&#8221; conjures the same type of trepidation today that very early (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/news\/christopher-columbus-never-set-out-to-prove-the-earth-was-round\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>before the Third Century BC<\/strong><\/a>) explorers must have felt when they thought the Earth was flat and if they navigated too far west, they&#8217;d fall off the edge of the map? \u00a0 Why is it Hollywood has consistently portrayed the area just beyond city limits as either a dystopian wasteland or a bastion of lawless libertinage?\u00a0 For that matter, why do so many &#8220;inner city&#8221; Duke City dwellers believe the city limits is too far a distance to travel for a good meal?<\/p>\n<p>Think I&#8217;m kidding?\u00a0 When I told friends and colleagues about having discovered one of the state&#8217;s very best green chile cheeseburgers in the South Valley, their typical reactions were &#8220;<em>only you would go <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">that<\/span> far for a burger<\/em>&#8221; and &#8220;<em>why didn&#8217;t you just go a little further and eat at<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nmgastronome.com\/?p=176\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>The Owl.<\/strong><\/a>&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0 You&#8217;d think I had trekked to South America, not the South Valley.\u00a0 You&#8217;d think I had risked life and limb.\u00a0 Perhaps the South Valley of their imaginations and memories is not the South Valley of today.\u00a0 It&#8217;s still somewhat rural and more agricultural than any part of the city, but there&#8217;s a lot of modern infill, too&#8230;as well as some pretty good dining opportunities all culinary explorers should visit.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_52214\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-52214\" style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-52214 size-full lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 750px; means the natillas are free to first time visitors of the City Limits Restaurant, but even at full price (about three-dollars), they&#8217;re worth the drive from anywhere in the metropolitan area.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_52212\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-52212\" style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-52212 size-full lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 750px; Among other things done right is service.\u00a0 Sure, you&#8217;ve got to walk up to the counter to place your order, but the staff is very friendly and accommodating.\u00a0 You won&#8217;t find an empty coffee mug on the premises.\u00a0 Another of those things done right is breakfast being served all day long.\u00a0 Right, too, is the menu, a compendium of deliciousness.<\/p>\n<p>That menu is replete with New Mexico comfort food&#8211;including red or green enchiladas, carne adovada, tacos and tostadas as well as chicken fried steak and meatloaf&#8211;served in generous portions.\u00a0\u00a0 At half-a-pound each, burgers are twice the size of the Quarter Pounder and they&#8217;re served with your choice of steak house fries, a side salad or housemade potato salad.\u00a0 You can also have your burger on a tortilla or sopaipilla.\u00a0 Chicken sandwiches, deli sandwiches and burritos round out a bounty as alluring as the seven cities of gold were to Francisco V\u00e1zquez de Coronado.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_52213\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-52213\" style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-52213 size-full lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 750px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 750\/538;border: 4px solid black; margin-top: 3px; margin-bottom: 3px;\" data-src=\"https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/CityLights03.gif?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"538\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-52213\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Complimentary Natillas for First-Time Guests<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>28 June 2019<\/strong>: There are eleven burgers on the menu, each one an invitation to enjoyment.\u00a0 All burgers are topped with lettuce, tomato onion and mustard.\u00a0 They&#8217;re hand-pressed and prepared to your exacting degree of doneness.\u00a0 The <em><strong>green chile cheeseburger<\/strong><\/em> is a picture-perfect exemplar of New Mexico&#8217;s most sacrosanct sandwich, and it takes two hands to handle this beefy behemoth between sesame seed buns.\u00a0 The beef is fresh and well seasoned, the green chile roasted and piquant.\u00a0 The steak fries are also prepared to order.\u00a0 They&#8217;re crispy on the outside and soft and tender inside.<\/p>\n<p><strong>28 June 2019<\/strong>: As for the free to first-time visitors natillas, if you&#8217;re not already preparing for a trip to the South Valley, you&#8217;re going to miss out on an addictive treat.\u00a0 These <em><strong>natillas<\/strong><\/em> are in rarefied air as some of the very best in a state that prepares natillas better even than Spain.\u00a0 The secret, my server, explained is constant stirring.\u00a0 That&#8217;s evinced in a creaminess that&#8217;s entirely devoid of those annoying little lumps you find in arroz-con-leche.\u00a0 A generous sprinkling of cinnamon lends an intoxicating aroma and warming qualities that temper the sweetness of the natillas.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_54346\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-54346\" style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/CityLimits07.gif?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-54346 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 750px; They would arrive home the next day thoroughly exhausted.\u00a0 Too exhausted, it turned out, to enjoy my mom\u2019s traditional Good Friday lunch of <em><strong>tortas de huevo<\/strong><\/em>. That left more for me. Tortas de huevo are a traditional Lenten dish typically served on Fridays when New Mexican Catholics are expected to abstain from meat. Moreover, they\u2019re absolutely delicious. Picture a sort-of egg fritter whipped into a light, fluffy texture and fried then topped with red chile. Five or six of these eggy chile delivery vehicles with pinto beans and calabasitas and there\u2019s no way you can bemoan the fact that you didn\u2019t have a single hamburger on a Lenten Friday.<\/p>\n<p>On Ash Wednesday and every Friday during Lent in 2020, City Limits serves torta de huevo with calabasitas and frijoles (pinto beans), preparing them nearly as well as my mom did. You like tomato and I like tomahto<\/em>.&#8221;\u00a0 Northern New Mexicans tell our less cultured Southern brethren &#8220;<em>You say sopa.\u00a0 I say capirotada.&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0 By any name (City Limits calls it &#8220;<em><strong>sopa<\/strong><\/em>&#8220;), this unique bread pudding is one of my very favorite desserts during, before and after Lent.\u00a0 One of the things that makes sopa unique is the use of aged or savory cheese.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a nice counterbalance to the sweet syrup in which the bread is soaked.\u00a0 City Limits uses <span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">feathered cheddar which is shredded, but not to a fine degree.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a great melting cheese which helps make sopa an outstanding bread pudding.\u00a0 My friend Larry McGoldrick, the professor with the perspicacious palate and an expert on bread pudding, would love it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The ABQ City Limits Restaurant in the South Valley should evoke a spirit of adventure in all culinary explorers.
