ABQ in Nob Hill<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">In 1940, Thomas Wolfe penned <em>You Can&#8217;t Go Home Again<\/em>, a novel whose deeply existential title prompted more than water cooler conversations.\u00a0 It prompted profound philosophical discourse, internal reflection and pangs of nostalgia about better days remembered.\u00a0 Readers pondered if it was true that &#8220;<em>you can&#8217;t go back home to your family, back home to your childhood<\/em>.&#8221;\u00a0 Realists concluded the novel&#8217;s title meant you can&#8217;t return to a place of another time and expect that everything would be exactly the same.\u00a0 Optimists\u00a0 took it a bit further, positing that while some things may change, other things don&#8217;t change and some things might actually be better.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">Wolfe&#8217;s novel came to mind when we first heard a legendary Santa Fe institution had licensed a franchise in Albuquerque.\u00a0 That institution, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nmgastronome.com\/?p=29443\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Santa Fe Bite<\/strong><\/a> had itself once provided evidence that you <em>can<\/em> go back home.\u00a0 For six decades, that institution&#8211;then known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nmgastronome.com\/?p=81\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Bobcat Bite<\/strong><\/a>&#8211;earned every accolade conceivable before relocating to the Santa Fe Plaza area in 2003.\u00a0 There was a lot of charm in its Lilliputian digs where you sat elbow-to-elbow with other diners who, like you, had waited eagerly for one of the Bobcat Bite&#8217;s 26 seats to become available.\u00a0\u00a0 The intimate space provided the added benefit of being in close proximity to the kitchen where the incomparable aroma of arguably the world&#8217;s best green chile cheeseburger pervaded the tiny adobe roadhouse.\u00a0 For many of us, the Bobcat Bite felt like home.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_53458\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-53458\" style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/SantaFeBiteAbq07.gif?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-53458 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 750px; font-family: Verdana;\">When the Bobcat Bite moved and rechristened itself, we wondered if that sense of hominess that permeated its little lair would be lost.\u00a0 Sure, in its capacious new dwelling, seating would be easier to come by.\u00a0 And with more room in which to operate, the menu could be expanded greatly.\u00a0 And you&#8217;d be closer to the Plaza.\u00a0 You can see these as positives, but after our inaugural visit to Santa Fe Bite at the Garrett&#8217;s Desert Inn, we quickly discerned what had made the Bobcat Bite feel like home.\u00a0 It was John and Bonnie Eckre.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">John, of course, was the indefatigable &#8220;burger meister&#8221; who hand-fashioned and seasoned all three of the restaurant\u2019s cast-iron grills.\u00a0 He was the &#8220;back-of-the-house&#8221; presence who painstakingly created a burger so good that when he shared its secrets with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eater.com\/2015\/10\/20\/9464775\/green-chile-cheeseburger-new-mexico-santa-fe-bite\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Eater<\/strong><\/a>, most of us just figured out it was too much work to try duplicating it. Bonnie was the perpetually smiling (with her eyes, too) front-of-the-house face of the restaurant.\u00a0 She is a study in quiet grace and hospitality, the embodiment of kindness.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_52470\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-52470\" style=\"width: 525px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-52470 size-full lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 525px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 525\/700;border: 4px solid black; margin-top: 3px; margin-bottom: 3px;\" data-src=\"https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/SantaFeBiteAbq03.gif?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"700\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/SantaFeBiteAbq03.gif?lossy=2&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 525w, https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/SantaFeBiteAbq03.gif?size=128x171&amp;lossy=2&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 128w, https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/SantaFeBiteAbq03.gif?size=256x341&amp;lossy=2&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 256w, https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/SantaFeBiteAbq03.gif?size=384x512&amp;lossy=2&amp;strip=1&amp;webp=1 384w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-52470\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Green Chile Stew<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">You can duplicate recipes, maybe even fashion and season cast iron grills, but you can&#8217;t duplicate John and Bonnie Eckre&#8230;and you can&#8217;t duplicate the sense of home and family that the Eckres created over the years.\u00a0 That was the source of my trepidation when I set foot in the Albuquerque franchise in the heart of Nob Hill.\u00a0 Fittingly because of its location, Santa Fe Bite &#8211; ABQ celebrates Route 66.\u00a0 Walls are festooned with vintage New Mexico license plates, Coke and Pepsi bric-a-brac and images of muscle cars which once prowled the Mother Road.\u00a0 I was seated near the very front of the restaurant, almost directly beneath a photograph of John and Bonnie Eckre.\u00a0 For me, that was a place of honor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">Not much, if anything, has changed on the menu from what was served at the City Different&#8217;s Santa Fe Bite. That means the world-famous burgers, now available in three sizes and even with bacon. The menu also includes New Mexican staples such as tacos, enchiladas and green chile stew. Ribeye and New York strip steaks are also available. A &#8220;today only&#8221; special offering all burgers discounted at 25% off greeted me on my inaugural visit.\u00a0 Icing on the cake was the option of substituting the side of chips that normally accompany burgers with potato salad, green chile stew, coleslaw or salad.\u00a0 My timing was impeccable!<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_52471\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-52471\" style=\"width: 525px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-52471 size-full lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 525px; font-family: Verdana;\"><strong>23 July 2019<\/strong>: Actor John Barrymore once quipped, &#8220;<em>I&#8217;d like to find a stew that will give me heartburn immediately instead of at three o&#8217;clock in the morning<\/em>.&#8221;\u00a0 Most New Mexicans believe <em><strong>green chile stew<\/strong><\/em>, the elixir of life in these parts, isn&#8217;t so\u00a0 much &#8220;heart-burning&#8221; as it is &#8220;heart-warming.&#8221;\u00a0 We enjoy it even as much on balmy summer days as we do when wintry air bites our cheeks and stings our fingers.\u00a0 We enjoy it as an appetizer, as a side and as an entree.\u00a0 I discovered it&#8217;s also a better pairing with a green chile cheeseburger than fries are.\u00a0 Large chunks of ground pork and neon-green chile are the essence of this incomparable comfort food stew.\u00a0 It&#8217;s got just a bit of piquancy, but lots of flavor&#8230;and the aroma is magical.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\"><strong>23 July 2019<\/strong>: Self-flagellation and public cries of &#8220;<em>mea culpa, mea culpa, mea gran culpa<\/em>&#8221; are in order because when my server asked at what degree of &#8220;doneness&#8221; I wanted my burger, I responded &#8220;<em>whatever the chef thinks is best<\/em>.&#8221;\u00a0 At steak restaurants, the very same request almost invariably results in a medium-rare steak or chop&#8211;the way I love and expect them.\u00a0 Alas, the burger served to me was medium-well without any of the characteristic pink inside that John Eckre had made an art form.\u00a0 Again, entirely my fault!\u00a0 Other elements of the burger&#8211;a potent green chile, a blend of Swiss and American cheese&#8211;brought back memories of the Bobcat Bite, but my next burger order will certainly be with more decisiveness.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_53460\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-53460\" style=\"width: 700px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/SantaFeBiteAbq09.gif?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-53460 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 700px; The Way It Should Always Be<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\"><strong>19 November 2019<\/strong>: &#8220;<em>Medium-rare ten-ounce green chile cheeseburger emphasis on the medium-rare<\/em>&#8221; were my exact words in ordering my second <em><strong>green chile cheeseburger<\/strong><\/em> at Santa Fe Bite ABQ.\u00a0 By definition that degree of doneness promises &#8220;<em>light red \u2014hot center<\/em>.&#8221;\u00a0 Unless the sight of a light red burger makes you queasy, take a gander at the burger delivered to my table.\u00a0 It was precisely as ordered (my friend Sandy Driscoll will be proud).\u00a0 That&#8217;s ten ounces&#8211;the equivalent weight of two and a half quarter-pounders&#8211;of steak quality beef nestled between homemade buns barely able of keeping in all that juiciness and flavor.\u00a0 Larry McGoldrick, the professor with the perspicacious palate, would describe it as a &#8220;<em>competition-style green chile cheeseburger<\/em>.&#8221;\u00a0 Order it completely unadorned and let the beef take you away.\u00a0 This is a six napkin burger so good you&#8217;ll start planning your next one immediately after finishing it.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">Country crooner John Denver once compared the feeling of being back home again to being with &#8220;a <em>long lost friend<\/em>.&#8221; I have a feeling that in time, Santa Fe Bite &#8211;
