Pizza is like sex\u2014even when it&#8217;s bad, it&#8217;s good<\/em>.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0Ironically, as a teenager Janssen became a vegetarian for &#8220;ethical reasons&#8221; but determined rather quickly that he didn&#8217;t like vegetables.\u00a0 A pizza diet seemed to make sense.\u00a0 Just as a diet of nothing but McDonald&#8217;s food for a month wreaked havoc on Morgan Spurlock&#8217;s health, Janssen&#8217;s pizza diet has given him diabetes and created low blood sugar issues.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of pizza consumption, Dan Janssen is&#8230;well above average (putting it mildly).\u00a0 The average American eats an average of 46 slices of pizza per year, amounting to 23 pounds of pizza per year.\u00a0 Over a lifetime, the average American will eat 6,000 slices of pizza&#8211;or about what it would take Janssen just over a year to polish off. They were able to quickly confirm what the enticing aromas were telling them&#8211;that Slice &amp; Dice bakes one heckuva pizza.\u00a0 We, on-the-other-hand, had to transport our fourteen-inch pie 10.3 miles, a 25-minute excursion at posted speed limits.\u00a0 Thank you Cabrona Virus for making it possible for diners to enjoy only take-out pizza.\u00a0 \u00a0This is akin to being inches away from riches untold but not being able to grasp them.<\/p>\n<p>Slice &amp; Dice may be relatively new to the Duke City metropolitan area, but it&#8217;s got a pizza pie pedigree that goes back almost as long as the distance home felt. Owner Vic Briseno was raised in the family pizzeria, the <a href=\"http:\/\/surfshackpizza.net\/home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Surf Shack<\/strong><\/a> in Grants, New Mexico, which, according to its website,\u00a0 &#8220;<em>has been making killer pizza for 15 years<\/em>.&#8221;\u00a0 \u00a0The restaurant&#8217;s pedigree is subtitled &#8220;Board Game Pizzeria,&#8221; a homage to Vic Briseno&#8217;s other passion.\u00a0 Slice &amp; Dice provides an extensive board game library that guests can choose from to enjoy while dining on family recipes.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_54583\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-54583\" style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/SliceDice03.gif?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-54583 size-full lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 750px; about halfway between thin and thick.\u00a0 The meats are sheathed under a molten blanket of melting cheese with mushrooms and black olives on top.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a convergence of ingredients that really work well together.\u00a0 Contrary to my initial impressions, we couldn&#8217;t finish off but two slices each&#8211;a good thing it turns out because breakfast pizza is as good as lunch and dinner pizza.\u00a0\u00a0This is a pizza which earns its name of Full House.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4 April 2020<\/strong>: There&#8217;s more than pizza on the menu though Dan Janssen would never get that far in reading the menu.\u00a0 He&#8217;d never, for example, notice that there are four sub-sandwiches on the menu as well as six specialty subs.\u00a0 Nor would Janssen even consider any of the four appetizers, not even the <em><strong>stuffed mushrooms<\/strong><\/em> (baked mushrooms with Italian sausage, onion, bell pepper and cream cheese topped with Parmesan).\u00a0 Thank goodness my Kim and I aren&#8217;t on an exclusive pizza diet.\u00a0 The stuffed mushrooms, six per order, are terrific.\u00a0 Each teacup sized mushroom cap will give you two- to three-bites of juiciness and flavor.\u00a0 \u00a0In some ways, it&#8217;s like pizza within a mushroom with the added surprise twist of cream cheese.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_82130\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-82130\" style=\"width: 850px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-82130 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 850px; was delivered to my table.\u00a0 This behemoth (eight-inches) toasted hoagie featured twelve (yes, twelve) huge ounces of pastrami, turkey and ham with Cheddar, Swiss and Provolone topped with lettuce, tomatoes, onions, pickles, mayonnaise and mustard.\u00a0 It&#8217;s one of nine sub sandwiches on the menu and it&#8217;s easily one of the tallest, most gloriously endowed sandwiches in Albuquerque.\u00a0 On Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, Fieri is often shown easily chomping down on skyscraper tall sandwiches.\u00a0 I couldn&#8217;t match that feat and had to squish the sandwich down to bite into it.\u00a0 This isn&#8217;t just a towering sandwich.\u00a0 It&#8217;s an outstanding creation.\u00a0 Similar sandwiches brimming with meats tend to be on the dry side, but the &#8220;Monsters&#8221; retained its moistness and deliciousness.\u00a0 Who would have known monsters could be so good on a sub.<\/p>\n<p><strong>22 May 2026<\/strong>: Because our inaugural visit to Slice &amp; Dice transpired during the height of the Cabrona Virus, we didn&#8217;t get a true picture of just how good its pizza is.\u00a0 Sure, we liked it well enough, but didn&#8217;t find it especially life-altering.\u00a0 Certainly, the half-hour drive home had a lot to do with that.\u00a0 My friend Bill Resnik has been touting Slice &amp; Dice&#8217;s pies for quite a while now.\u00a0 We decided a second visit was in order in May, 2026 when my Kim was jonesing for a <em><strong>Hawaiian pizza<\/strong><\/em> (loaded with extra ham, bacon and pineapple).\u00a0 I added green chile to my half for a delightful contrast to the sweet, juicy pineapple.\u00a0 Within two bites, we were declaring Slice &amp; Dice&#8217;s pizza one of the three best pizzas in the Duke City (along with the prodigious pies at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nmgastronome.com\/?p=58075\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Thicc Pizza Co<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nmgastronome.com\/?p=64127\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Gold Street Pizza)<\/strong><\/a>. The pizza dough struck the perfect balance between a crispy exterior and a soft, airy, and chewy interior. Not even the oft-neglected cornicione (the raised, puffy outer edge or rim of a pizza) was left unconsumed. Pineapple a plenty and bountiful bounty of bacon draped under a molten blanket of cheese made me forget I don&#8217;t always like Hawaiian pizza.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_82137\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-82137\" style=\"width: 850px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-82137 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 850px; Dice are able to put that notion into our minds.\u00a0 That&#8217;s saying a lot.\u00a0 Note:\u00a0 In August, 2023, Slice &amp; Dice opened a second spot.\u00a0 It&#8217;s located in the Northeast Heights on Wyoming near Menaul, in the Hoffmantown Shopping Center.\u00a0 Now &#8220;east-siders&#8221;
