font-family: Verdana;\">You might think that a beautiful town whose very name translates from Spanish to &#8220;noisy&#8221; would be boisterous and braggadocious abut all there is to see and do in that town.\u00a0 Not so according to writer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newmexico.org\/nmmagazine\/articles\/author\/tania-casselle\/58b4b2404c2774661570f257\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Tania Casselle<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0 Penning a piece for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newmexico.org\/nmmagazine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>New Mexico Magazine<\/strong> <\/a>Tania contends that &#8220;<em>Ruidoso flies under a lot of people\u2019s radar, even though regular vacationers are intensely loyal\u2014and probably don\u2019t want too many people to know about it<\/em>.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">Whether or not it truly it truly flies under a lot of people&#8217;s radar, Ruidoso is indeed an idyllic location, an enchanted mountain oasis of incomparable beauty.\u00a0 It&#8217;s an year-round mountain playground in which deer, elk, turkey, quail, bear and lots of Texans roam the golf courses and streets.\u00a0 Those are the qualities for which Ruidoso is known&#8230;at least by vacationers who probably don&#8217;t want too many people to know about it.\u00a0 What Ruidoso hasn&#8217;t been widely known for&#8211;at least until rather recently&#8211;is its culinary scene.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_54968\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-54968\" style=\"width: 525px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/CafeRio02-scaled.jpeg?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-54968 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 525px; font-family: Verdana;\">Denizens of the Land of Enchantment know the best green chile cheeseburgers in the universe can only be found within our state\u2019s borders. We esteem our green chile cheeseburgers with such high regard that our state\u2019s Department of Tourism promotes a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmgastronome.com\/?p=10532\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>trail<\/strong><\/a> listing purveyors who prepare them best. Most of us couldn\u2019t fathom of a burger without green chile, but the rest of the fruited plain isn\u2019t quite as lucky. For much of the country, bacon is the burger additive of choice.\u00a0 In 2018, Delish evaluated Yelp reviews and published a list of the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.delish.com\/restaurants\/g1108\/best-bacon-burgers-us\/?slide=32\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Best Bacon Burger in Every State<\/strong><\/a>.\u201d New Mexico\u2019s best bacon burger, the \u201cSouthwest Burger\u201d comes from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/HALL-OF-FLAME-BURGERS-105007229530507\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Hall of Flame Burgers<\/strong><\/a> in Ruidoso.\u00a0 Hall of Flame Burgers is on the New Mexico Green Chile Cheeseburger Trail so you\u2019ll certainly be able to improve the state\u2019s best bacon burger with the addition of our sacrosanct green chile.\u00a0 We tried to visit Hall of Flame, but arrived fifteen minutes after its 7PM closing time. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">Far &amp; Wide contends that \u201c<em>even bad pizza is pretty good, but there are some pizzas that are much better than \u201cstill pretty good\u201d \u2013 they\u2019re out-of-this-world amazing<\/em>.\u201d Using TripAdvisor data of all the pizza joints for which reviewers were giving top marks\u2014accounting for overall ratings and the quality and quantity of reviews\u2013Far &amp; Wide compiled a list of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nmgastronome.com\/?p=45137\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>best pizza in every state<\/strong><\/a>. We pride ourselves on our excellent reputation among our followers and push ourselves to always meet and exceed those standards which you all have set for us over these last two-and-a-half decades<\/em>.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_54970\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-54970\" style=\"width: 576px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/CafeRio04-scaled.jpeg?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-54970 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 576px; font-family: Verdana;\">Considering the diminutive dwelling in which Cafe Rio plies its pizza, you might be surprised to find a rather expansive menu: four starters, four items on the soup and salad menu and four sandwiches.\u00a0 Peruse those quickly.\u00a0 It&#8217;s the pizza menu that warrants your rapt attention.\u00a0 Avian appetites will be happy to see you can still get a single slice with as many as two toppings, but most of us will gravitate toward the specialty combinations (white or red), preferably in the &#8220;jumbo&#8221; sized option.\u00a0 The aforementioned &#8220;Kitchen Sink&#8221; is a best seller, but less adventurous diners might strip out anchovies and (or) pineapple.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">According to Cafe Rio&#8217;s website, the restaurant serves &#8220;East Coast-style pizza,&#8221; a rather broad term which generally means fresh-made daily, from scratch crust that&#8217;s relatively thin and crispy with just a slight cornicione (an Italian term for the \u201clip\u201d or puffy outer edge of the pizza) and just a few high quality ingredients.\u00a0 Just as with burgers, there&#8217;s a finite number of ingredients with which you can top a pizza before it becomes a jumble of indiscernible flavors.\u00a0 Irrespective of that number, green chile still makes that pizza better.\u00a0 The <em><strong>Meat<\/strong><\/em> (pepperoni, Canadian bacon, salami, beef brisket, andouille sausage, and Italian sausage) with green chile is an amazing pizza even though it may defy the &#8220;East coast-style&#8221; template because of its sheer number of ingredients.\u00a0\u00a0 This carnivore&#8217;s delight certainly belongs in any conversation about New Mexico&#8217;s best pizza (though my money is still on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nmgastronome.com\/?p=42880\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Forghedaboudit<\/strong><\/a>).<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">We weren&#8217;t quite as crazy about our starter as we were about the pizza.\u00a0 There were two strikes against the otherwise aptly named <em><strong>Tzatziki<\/strong><\/em> (cucumber, Greek yogurts and fresh chopped garlic served with fresh focaccia).\u00a0 First, it showcased cucumbers with large slices of the thickly cut fresh, crunchy vine plant instead of making them a complementary ingredient and vehicle for the yogurt and other seasonings.\u00a0 Cucumbers have very little flavor and typically need a lot of help.\u00a0 Second, the &#8220;fresh&#8221; focaccia had a day-old texture, perhaps by design.\u00a0 Soft focaccia wouldn&#8217;t have held up as well as the cucumbers, but would have had the tzatziki been more sauce- or dip-like. \u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">If indeed Ruidoso residents and vacationers would like to keep this enchanted paradise their own well-kept secret, visitors to Cafe Rio might just blow it for them.
