font-family: Verdana;\">Virtually from infancy, my brother George was a prodigy with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/LINCOLN-LOGS-Anniversary-Construction-Education\/dp\/B00RWNEN9W\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Lincoln<\/strong><\/a> logs, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Meccano-Construction-Motorized-Building-Education\/dp\/B07C4ZWC1F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Erector<\/a><\/strong> sets and even <a href=\"https:\/\/thetoybox1138.blogspot.com\/2011\/12\/lincoln-logs-tinkertoys-and-erector.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Tinkertoys<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0 He could literally build anything.\u00a0 That&#8217;s when he played indoors.\u00a0 He preferred being out in the elements where weather-permitting, he would build solid and rainproof club houses and tree houses out of twigs, logs, boards and whatever else he could find.\u00a0 In the winter, he built Eskimo-worthy igloos.\u00a0 To no one&#8217;s surprise, George became a carpenter, quickly rising to the rank of construction superintendent.\u00a0 Over a rather luminous career, he&#8217;s built stately residences as well as mission-critical structures and facilities at the Los Alamos National Labs.\u00a0 In his rare spare time, he builds furniture and carves wood into artistic pieces.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">In entrepreneur Roy Solomon, George has a kindred spirit.\u00a0 In 2015, Solomon launched a community-oriented commercial plaza constructed entirely with repurposed shipping containers as modular, architectural building blocks.\u00a0\u00a0 Christened the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenjeansfarmery.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Green Jeans Farmery<\/strong><\/a>, the unique twist on a shopping plaza is an architectural marvel George would have enjoyed building.\u00a0 Several among the cluster of shipping container buildings are connected by a bridge.\u00a0 You can literally walk from one rooftop deck to another.\u00a0 From the very beginning, Green Jeans Farmery has housed a number of terrific restaurants.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_55031\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-55031\" style=\"width: 735px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/TinCanAlley02.jpeg?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-55031 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 735px; font-family: Verdana;\">In 2019, Roy Solomon began construction on Albuquerque&#8217;s second shipping container project.\u00a0 Located on Alameda just east of San Pedro, the new concept&#8211;fittingly called Tin Can Alley&#8211;launched on 30 May 2020.\u00a0 It is easily one of the Land of Enchantment&#8217;s most unique and striking eating, drinking and shipping venues, an 11,000-square-foot behemoth housing ten local businesses all under one roof. Nay-sayers might tell you the exterior resembles a dystopian structure, but within the capacious two-story venue is a colorful and comfortable milieu that&#8217;s home to ten local restaurants and shops.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">Among the inaugural Tin Can Alley tenants are such long-time Duke City stalwarts as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nmgastronome.com\/?p=11515\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Guava Tree Cafe<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nmgastronome.com\/?p=26313\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Amore Neapolitan Pizzeria<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.michaelthomascoffee.com\/menu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Michael Thomas Coffee Roaster<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0 Newcomers include such soon-to-be favorites as <a href=\"https:\/\/cocoafloranm.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Cocoa Flora<\/strong><\/a>, a concept showcasing small plate offerings and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.toasttab.com\/flipflops\/v3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Flipflops<\/strong><\/a> Beach Grub whose recipes were inspired by other (and now defunct) Albuquerque favorites <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nmgastronome.com\/?p=274\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>505 Southwestern<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nmgastronome.com\/?p=11457\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Bailey\u2019s on the Beach<\/strong><\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nmgastronome.com\/?p=38339\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Chumly\u2019s Southwestern<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0 As at Green Jeans, Santa Fe Brewing Co. has a taproom and is one of the concept&#8217;s anchors, occupying nearly fifty-percent of the total space.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_55032\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-55032\" style=\"width: 735px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/TinCanAlley08.jpeg?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-55032 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 735px; font-family: Verdana;\">On opening day, only to-go orders were available.\u00a0 Two days later on June 1st, the state\u2019s public health order allowed for dine-in services, albeit at a significantly reduced capacity.\u00a0 Judging from the packed parking lot on the day of my inaugural visit just three days later, I had to wonder if the mandated fifty percent capacity rule was being adhered to.\u00a0 Fortunately, there are built-in features within the building that naturally subscribe to health guidelines.\u00a0 For example, the complex boasts of a 30-foot ceiling with an oscillating fan the size of a windmill blade, restrooms with hands-free features, roof top patios and large windows that offer drag air when opened.\u00a0 Each business has a back door for people who want grab and go.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">When my friend Ryan &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/breakthechainnm\/videos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Break the Chain<\/strong><\/a>&#8221; Scott invited me to lunch at Tin Can Alley, we were both looking forward to a unique dining experience in a venue unlike any other in the metropolitan area.\u00a0 Arriving early, Ryan secured comfortable seating on living room quality armchairs.\u00a0 From our second floor seats, our vantage point was of the sprawling complex.\u00a0 We gazed downward at the mass of humanity trying to navigate social distancing dictates while pondering what to indulge in.\u00a0 The bright, airy setting has an outdoorsy feeling even when you&#8217;re enveloped by comfortable chairs.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_55033\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-55033\" style=\"width: 611px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/PhoKup01.jpeg?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-55033 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 611px; font-family: Verdana;\">As Ryan and I ruminated about just what we should order, we couldn&#8217;t help but notice the double-entendre name bestowed on one of the eatery pods: Pho Kup.\u00a0 Ironically, a similar pronunciation of that eatery&#8217;s name was used by a seventh-grade teacher to describe my skills at woodworking after it took me an entire semester to complete a rather warped and askew cutting board for which I earned a well-deserved &#8220;D.&#8221;\u00a0 Apparently, unlike my brother George, the only good thing I&#8217;m good at constructing is sentences, but I digress.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">Considering its relatively small space Pho Kup offers a fairly ambitious menu of Vietnamese favorites.\u00a0 Not surprisingly, pho is the first item listed on the menu. Five appetizers&#8211;including fried egg rolls and chicken wings&#8211;are next up followed by five types of spring rolls and four sandwiches (banh mi). Pho Kup offers its beef noodle soup in two sizes: small&#8211;the &#8220;Minor Pho Kup&#8221; at 32-ounces; and large&#8211;a &#8220;Major Pho Kup&#8221; topping the scales at 64-ounces.\u00a0\u00a0 Both sizes are available with your choice of noodle, broth, protein (rare steak, beef meatball, smoke brisket, chicken, tofu), and garnish (white onions, green onions, cilantro) and are served with hoisin and sriracha sauce on the side. Pho Kup is stand-alone good, a proficient purveyor of fantastic pho.
