font-family: Verdana;\">In her correspondence with her best friend, Georgia O&#8217;Keeffe lamented that she &#8220;<em>always has a hard time finding words for anything<\/em>.\u201d When it came to relaying her awe at the sensory wonder surrounding her in Abiquiu, O\u2019Keeffe was never at a loss for words.\u00a0\u00a0 With a prosaic ease, she described her isolated idyll as &#8220;<em>the most beautiful place you can imagine.\u00a0 It&#8217;s so beautiful there.\u00a0 It&#8217;s ridiculous<\/em>.&#8221;\u00a0 Her passion for the surreal topography, juniper laden foothills and the sheer energy of the Southwest shimmered with growing vibrancy when she wrote of them.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">When her heart finally surrendered to the soul-touching experience of spectacular sunsets giving way to a night air swathed in a canopy of stars, she wrote her friend: &#8220;<em>Tonight I walked into the sunset \u2014 to mail some letters \u2014 the whole sky \u2014 and there is so much of it out here \u2014 was just blazing \u2014 and grey blue clouds were riding all through the holiness of it \u2014 and the ugly little buildings and windmills looked great against it.&#8221;\u00a0 <\/em>Visit the idyll Georgia O\u2019Keeffe called home and like her, you might find yourself lacking words adequate enough to describe what you&#8217;re experiencing.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_55144\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-55144\" style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/AbiquiuCafe02-e1592623250905.jpeg?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-55144 size-full lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 750px; font-family: Verdana;\">One of Georgia O&#8217;Keeffe&#8217;s paintings became a pop culture phenomenon with a cameo on the the third season of <strong><a title=\"Breaking Bad\" href=\"https:\/\/breakingbad.fandom.com\/wiki\/Breaking_Bad\">Breaking Bad<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0when meth maven Jesse Pinkman and his girlfriend Jane Margolis debated &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.okeeffemuseum.org\/door-road-line-shape\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>My Last Door.<\/strong><\/a>&#8221; \u00a0 Jesse argued that O&#8217;Keeffe painted the same door over and over in an attempt to achieve perfection, a concept the mercurial entrepreneur didn&#8217;t understand.\u00a0 Jane countered with the more perceptive observation that what O&#8217;Keeffe was trying to do was make a good feeling last.\u00a0 Though your memories of any visit to Abiquiu will last a lifetime, your stay in O&#8217;Keeffe country will likely be much shorter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">You&#8217;ll want to ensure your lodging is a polestar, a hub from which you can set off to take in your surroundings with accommodations which respect and blend into the topography.\u00a0 My highest recommendation is for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casitadechuparosa.com\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Casita De Chuparosa<\/strong><\/a>, set among dramatic panoramic views of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.okeeffemuseum.org\/support\/pedernal-society\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Pedernal<\/strong><\/a>, Georgia&#8217;s oft painted &#8220;private mountain&#8221; and within easy walking distance to the meandering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.okeeffemuseum.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Chama-River-Valley.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Rio Chama<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0 Another gateway, one adjacent to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.okeeffemuseum.org\/visit\/visitors-information\/directions-to-abiquiu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>O&#8217;Keeffe<\/strong><strong>: Welcome Center<\/strong><\/a>, is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abiquiuinn.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Abiquiu Inn<\/strong><\/a> which offers a variety of\u00a0 lodging choices.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_55145\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-55145\" style=\"width: 583px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/AbiquiuCafe03-e1592623296704.jpeg?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-55145 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 583px; font-family: Verdana;\">Adjacent to the Inn is Cafe Abiquiu &amp; The Terrace which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lonelyplanet.com\/usa\/new-mexico\/abiquiu\/restaurants\/cafe-abiquiu\/a\/poi-eat\/1254043\/1006461\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Lonely Planet<\/strong><\/a> describes as &#8220;<em>the nicest place to eat for miles around.&#8221;<\/em> \u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.onlyinyourstate.com\/new-mexico\/cafe-abiquiu-countryside-restaurant-nm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Only In Your State<\/strong><\/a> expressed similar and more complimentary sentiments: &#8220;<em>This restaurant way out in the New Mexico countryside has the best doggone food you&#8217;ve tried in ages<\/em>.&#8221;\u00a0 Not only does the sophisticated menu both honor and belie Abiquiu&#8217;s bucolic surroundings, the covered terrace is one of the best al fresco dining venues in the entire Land of Enchantment.\u00a0 Even on a warm summer night, you&#8217;re well shielded from the sun&#8217;s searing rays.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">Cafe Abiquiu is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, offering casual dining in the aforementioned terrace or in a small dining room adorned with the work of local artists.\u00a0 The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abiquiuinn.com\/cafe-abiquiu-now-open\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>menu<\/strong><\/a> is replete with housemade fare including traditional Northern New Mexico favorites, delightful desserts and a delightful specialty espresso service.\u00a0 As we approached the Cafe on a balmy Friday evening, it was the aroma of steak grilling that confirmed we made the best dinner decision possible.\u00a0 The Cafe was rather busy, but an energetic service staff operated with efficiency and alacrity.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_55146\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-55146\" style=\"width: 543px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/AbiquiuCafe04-e1592623329399.jpeg?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-55146 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 543px; font-family: Verdana;\">The &#8220;small plates&#8221; section of the menu lists seven appetizers including hummus and avocado toast.\u00a0 Our selection was the <em><strong>elote dip<\/strong><\/em>, a three cheese Mexican street corn dip served with blue and yellow corn chips.\u00a0 We debated whether or not Georgia O&#8217;Keeffe would have liked this dish.\u00a0 The adventurous painter was known to have been an avid gardener whose recipes were rather simple and replete with natural ingredients. The dip is rather simple, its ingredients natural and it&#8217;s a delicious way to start a meal.\u00a0 Our server graciously gave us a copy of the recipe, confirming the three cheeses were cream cheese, Parmesan and Cheddar.\u00a0 The sweet corn is emboldened by both cayenne and chile powder, but this dip probably has less heat than most con queso.\u00a0 We actually ran out of chips fairly early on, but happily enjoyed the remainder with spoons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">In 1922 Georgia O&#8217;Keeffe complained that critics \u201c<em>make me seem like some strange unearthly sort of creature floating in the air&#8212;breathing in clouds for nourishment&#8212;when the truth is that I like beef steak&#8212;and like it rare at that<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0 Though my Kim is the most down-to-earth antithesis of Georgia, she loves a good steak, too&#8230;and the grilled twelve-ounce <em><strong>ribeye<\/strong><\/em> with compound butter perfumed the air with an aroma not even Odysseus could have resisted.\u00a0 That aroma was a prelude to a slab of beef prepared to our exacting specifications&#8211;medium, not rare.\u00a0 The compound butter had melted onto the steak, an improvement over most compound butter which, while seemingly just out of the freezer, tends to be plopped on top of a steak.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_55147\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-55147\" style=\"width: 620px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/AbiquiuCafe05-e1592623379504.jpeg?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-55147 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 620px; font-family: Verdana;\">Dinner entrees are served with soup or salad, vegetable and your choice of mashed potatoes, French fries or sweet corn polenta cakes, the latter of which my Kim wouldn&#8217;t eat if they were smothered in chocolate sauce.\u00a0 French fries, it was.\u00a0 Not quite Texas-sized, these fries were thicker planks than the flaccid, anemic fries\u00a0 all too often served with steak.\u00a0 Our vegetable was grilled asparagus drizzled with a light balsamic.\u00a0 You won&#8217;t go away hungry if you finish a dinner plate and I have yet to mention the soup.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">Food Network glitterati Ina Garten considers grilled cheese and tomato soup the ultimate comfort food pairing.\u00a0 She must have had a tomato soup in mind much like the thick, creamy <em><strong>tomato bisque<\/strong><\/em> with blue corn tortilla strips strewn atop.\u00a0 If we left the table with one regret it&#8217;s that we didn&#8217;t ask for a bowl-sized portion.\u00a0 A cup of this enchanted elixir just isn&#8217;t enough.\u00a0 Best of all, the bisque is served hot, not warm or lukewarm.\u00a0 Luxuriating (much like a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.takemeaway.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Calgon<\/strong><\/a> escape) best describes the happy experience of enjoying this soup.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_55148\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-55148\" style=\"width: 735px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/AbiquiuCafe06-e1592623417342.jpeg?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-55148 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 735px; font-family: Verdana;\">The book <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Painters-Kitchen-Recipes-Georgia-OKeeffe\/dp\/0890135606\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>A Painter&#8217;s Kitchen: Recipes from the Kitchen of Georgia O&#8217;Keeffe<\/strong><\/a> highlight the legendary artist&#8217;s creativity in the kitchen where she took great pride in her healthy culinary style.\u00a0 O&#8217;Keeffe enjoyed both fruit and salad at noon and for her evening meal.\u00a0 In Cafe Abiquiu&#8217;s <em><strong>strawberry field green salad<\/strong><\/em> (New Mexico pistachios, roasted almonds, pickled onion, strawberries, Cotija and lemon vinaigrette), we enjoyed both.\u00a0 Every element of this salad was fresh and delicious with just enough dressing to accentuate the natural flavors of each item.\u00a0 We&#8217;d like to believe O&#8217;Keeffe would have enjoyed this salad.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">She probably would have enjoyed the unique dessert we chose, too.\u00a0 The <em><strong>burrata cheese and strawberries<\/strong><\/em> drizzled with lemon and honey is described as &#8220;<em>for that less dolce dessert experience<\/em>.&#8221;\u00a0 It was our first time enjoying burrata (an unnaturally soft and moist fresh Italian cheese made from cream and mozzarella) as a dessert of sorts. Translated to \u201cbuttered,\u201d it bears a strong resemblance to mozzarella, but is much softer and when penetrated by a knife or fork, has an interior that spills out, revealing unctuous, stringy curd and fresh cream.\u00a0 Because the strawberries were rather tart and the lemon and honey influence was tempered by more dominant flavors, the burrata was most definitely the star of this &#8220;dessert.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_55149\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-55149\" style=\"width: 629px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/AbiquiuCafe07-e1592623433829.jpeg?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-55149 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 629px;
