font-family: Verdana;\">About halfway between Truth or Consequences and Hatch on I-25, you may have espied a billboard audaciously proclaiming &#8220;<em>world&#8217;s finest green chile cheeseburger<\/em>.&#8221;\u00a0 That billboard has always piqued my curiosity and prompted such questions as &#8220;where the heck is Arrey?&#8221;\u00a0 Though signage directs motorists to Exit 59, all there is to see beyond the exit are verdant fields to the right and more high desert expanse to the left.\u00a0 Then, of course, there&#8217;s the obvious question &#8220;if it&#8217;s so darn good, why isn&#8217;t it on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nmgastronome.com\/?p=10532\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>New Mexico Green Chile Cheeseburger Trail<\/strong><\/a>?&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">As one of the quadrumvirate&#8211;along with the scintillating James Beard award-winning author <a href=\"http:\/\/excitedaboutfood.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Cheryl Jamison;<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0 Kate Manchester, founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ediblenm.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Edible Santa Fe;<\/strong><\/a> and former New Mexico Tourism Department Advertising manager Martin Leger&#8211;who came up with the hallowed list of restaurants, drive-ins, diners, dives, joints, cafes, roadside stands and bowling alleys who serve up the very best green chile cheeseburgers in the world, we should have known about the Arrey Cafe.\u00a0 Shouldn&#8217;t we have?\u00a0\u00a0 It didn&#8217;t come up during any of our lengthy discussion as to what burgers were &#8220;trail worthy.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_55784\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-55784\" style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/ArreyCafe02-scaled.jpeg?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-55784 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 750px; font-family: Verdana;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/people\/gustavo-arellano\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Gustavo Arellano<\/strong><\/a>, the brilliant and hilarious author of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Ask-Mexican-Gustavo-Arellano\/dp\/1416540032\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Ask a Mexican<\/strong><\/a> and currently columnist for the Los Angeles Times, visits Hatch every summer and he, too, has seen the billboard that screams, \u201cWorld\u2019s Finest Green Chile Cheeseburger.\u201d\u00a0 Unlike me, he actually put the brassy claim to the test.\u00a0 In an Eater article entitled &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eater.com\/2019\/1\/23\/18182665\/best-new-mexico-chile-restaurants-interstate-25\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>A Chile Road Trip on the I-25&#8243;<\/strong><\/a>, Arellano took the exit less traveled and after enjoying the burger, declared &#8220;<em>Its roadside ad is almost correct. Arrey makes a great burger<\/em>.&#8221;\u00a0 If the Arrey Cafe&#8217;s green chile cheeseburger was good enough for Gustavo Arellano, it&#8217;s got to be good enough for Gil Gardu\u00f1o!<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">We trekked to the Arrey Cafe, some three miles from Exit 59, and got there ten minutes before closing time, but the friendly and accommodating staff didn&#8217;t rush us.\u00a0 Not that they had to.\u00a0 There was only one thing we were going to have and that was the semi-famous world&#8217;s finest green chile cheeseburger.\u00a0 Burgers are available in quarter- and half-pound sizes, with or without cheese, chile and bacon.\u00a0 There are plenty of other options on the menu: sandwiches (including tortas), pizza, salads and several New Mexican food items.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_55785\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-55785\" style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/ArreyCafe03-scaled.jpeg?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-55785 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 750px; font-family: Verdana;\">The half-pound <em><strong>green chile cheeseburger<\/strong><\/em> is a behemoth between five-inch buns with two beef patties sandwiching American cheese and green chile.\u00a0 Lettuce, onions, pickles and a tomato also find space within the buns.\u00a0 We weren&#8217;t asked how we wanted our burger cooked, only whether we wanted mustard or ketchup.\u00a0 Burgers are prepared at medium-well, leaning toward well-done, but the beef patties appear to be hand-formed.\u00a0 Unlike Gustavo Arellano who found the green chile &#8220;fleshy and piquant,&#8221; your volcano-eating blogger would have wanted his burger &#8220;mas ardiente&#8221; (with more burn).\u00a0 Still, it&#8217;s a very good burger, well worthy of a place on the New Mexico Green Chile Cheeseburger Trail&#8230;which will hopefully be refreshed someday soon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">The next time you find yourself headed to southern New Mexico, take Exit 59 toward the &#8220;world&#8217;s finest green chile cheeseburger&#8221; and find out for yourself why Arrey can make such an audacious claim. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;
