Then came <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nmgastronome.com\/?p=6377\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Torinos at Home<\/strong> <\/a>followed not long thereafter by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nmgastronome.com\/?s=m%27tucci\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>M&#8217;Tucci&#8217;s Italian<\/strong> <\/a>restaurant dynasty.\u00a0 Today Duke City area diners who want to mangia bene have a wealth of options.\u00a0 In March, 2021, Rustico Italian Kitchen entered the fray.\u00a0 With a dynamic chef at the helm, Rustico began generating enthusiasm even before it launched.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_57413\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-57413\" style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Rustico02-scaled.jpeg?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-57413 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 750px; font-family: Verdana;\">At the helm is Chef Mike White, the New Mexico Restaurant Association Chef of the Year for 2018, an uber-talented chef and restaurant impressario with more than twenty years experience in New Mexico restaurants.\u00a0 We first became acquainted with Chef White&#8217;s culinary prowess when he launched The Point Grill in Rio Rancho&#8217;s far-out (in every way) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nmgastronome.com\/?p=38763\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Point Grill<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0 Ensconced in the Mariposa master-planned community, the Point Grill introduced a largesse of flavors in a Liliputian 1,200 square-foot space.\u00a0 In 2016, Chef White earned the &#8220;People&#8217;s Choice&#8221; award at the 6th annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nmgastronome.com\/?p=41259\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Taste of Rio Rancho<\/strong><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">In 2018 Chef White relocated his restaurant to a much larger space in much closer proximity to a larger population, ostensibly because his unique ability to coax \u00a0flavors, moments and experiences from his guests couldn&#8217;t be contained within such a small space\u00a0\u00a0 .He christened his reborn restaurant The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nmgastronome.com\/?p=50912\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>High Point Grill<\/strong><\/a> and quickly began earning <a href=\"https:\/\/highpointgrill.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>honors and accolades<\/strong><\/a> a plenty.\u00a0 One connotation of the new name is that a visit to the restaurant should be the \u201chigh point\u201d of your week or your day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_57414\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-57414\" style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Rustico03-scaled.jpeg?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-57414 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 750px; font-family: Verdana;\">During the height of the pandemic in 2020, Chef White announced he would be launching a scratch cooking Italian restaurant within the Promenade Shopping Center in a space formerly occupied by the Barley Room.\u00a0 \u201c<em>It\u2019s comfort food with a chef\u2019s twist on it<\/em>,\u201d the Chef told the <em>Albuquerque Journal<\/em> about his largest restaurant endeavor as an owner.\u00a0 Before he could launch Rustico, he also acquired <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nmgastronome.com\/?p=51477\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Bacon Jam<\/strong><\/a>, an American comfort food restaurant showcasing breakfast and lunch favorites, many of which incorporate bacon.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">No sooner had Rustico opened its doors in March, 2021 than my friend Ryan &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/breakthechainnm\/videos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Break The Chain<\/strong><\/a>&#8221; Scott began a one-man campaign to have me join him for lunch at his favorite new Italian restaurant.\u00a0 He raved about the &#8220;<em>best I&#8217;ve ever had<\/em>&#8221; tomato bisque and proclaimed greatness for Rustico.\u00a0 After our inaugural visit&#8211;when Rustico had run out of that acclaimed tomato bisque&#8211;we laid blame squarely on Ryan for having consumed all the restaurant&#8217;s food during his visit one day prior to ours.\u00a0 I swore right then and there never to forgive him for that!<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_57415\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-57415\" style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Rustico04-scaled.jpeg?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-57415 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 750px; font-family: Verdana;\">Our inaugural visit was on a Dr. Jeckyll day in New Mexico when the Land of Enchantment&#8217;s usual ill-tempered Mr. Hyde winds were surprisingly sedate.\u00a0 We found a nice shady spot in the expansive patio and took in the sights and sounds of the Promenade Shopping Center.\u00a0 Rivulets of water cascading down a water feature provided a tranquil background as we perused the menu.\u00a0 Though we knew Ryan had polished off everything but the pizza and salad, we enjoyed studying the entire menu which is laid out in several sections: pasta, salad, entrees, appetizers, charcuterie and pizza.\u00a0 Future visits would be imminent. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">In a podcast interview with the wonderful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nmrestaurants.org\/super-staff\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Carol Wight<\/strong><\/a>, CEO of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nmrestaurants.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>New Mexico Restaurant Association<\/strong><\/a>, Chef White explained Rustico would feature fresh pasta made in the dining room and fresh mozzarella pulled in front of the diners.\u00a0 He raved about a 10,000-pound stone and cast oven in the kitchen and the restaurant&#8217;s enviable chef-inspired gourmet-style pizza.\u00a0 His own favorite combination of gourmet pizza ingredients are smoked salmon, Gruyere cheese, capers and red onions.\u00a0 The pizza menu has other fun combinations pizza aficionados are sure to enjoy.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_57416\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-57416\" style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Rustico05-scaled.jpeg?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-57416 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 750px; font-family: Verdana;\">One of Chef White&#8217;s ambitions is for Rustico to become an industry hang-out.\u00a0 He would love for people in the hospitality industry to visit Rustico for a snack, cocktail or just to hang out with other bartenders, chefs, distributors and others who keep Albuquerque (and Ryan) well fed.\u00a0 To that end, he&#8217;s started &#8220;industry night&#8221; font-family: Verdana;\"><strong>3 April 2021<\/strong>: The genesis of rigatoni (or usually penne) alla vodka has long been in dispute with only a few sources attributing its origin to Italy (where wine is often added to tomato sauce, but vodka&#8211;never).\u00a0 Most seem to believe it&#8217;s of Italian-American origin.\u00a0 What isn&#8217;t in dispute is that <em><strong>rigatoni alla vodka<\/strong><\/em> (ground Italian sausage cooked in a vodka marinara, finished with cream served with fresh-made rigatoni) is a terrific dish.\u00a0 Rigatoni, a hearty past, is the perfect vehicle for the creamy, vibrant tomato an vodka-infused sauce seasoned with fresh herbs and Parmesan.\u00a0 More than any pasta we&#8217;ve had in the metropolitan area, this rigatoni was al dente, the perfect combination of firm and tender.\u00a0 This is an extraordinary version of one of our favorite pasta dishes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;
