font-family: Verdana;\">Remember the good old days when the only taboo related to the All American hot dog was the felonious act of adding ketchup. \u00a0 In the movie &#8220;Sudden Impact,&#8221;\u00a0 Clint Eastwood as &#8220;Dirty Harry&#8221; Callahan declared rather emphatically &#8220;<em>Nobody, I mean nobody puts ketchup on a hot dog<\/em>.&#8221;\u00a0 Barack Obama, the 44th president of the United States was nearly as ardent, asserting that ketchup on a hot dog is &#8220;<em>not acceptable past the age of 8<\/em>.\u201d Not that much later, diehards still consider it a mortal sin to add ketchup to a hot dog.\u00a0 Nary a dissenting voice, however, is raised at today&#8217;s &#8220;anything goes&#8221; attitude toward hot dog toppings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">Well, maybe almost anything goes.\u00a0 When I shared Clowndog Hot Dog Parlor&#8217;s menu with my dear friend <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Becky-Mercuri\/e\/B001JRXWVW%3Fref=dbs_a_mng_rwt_scns_share\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Becky Mercuri<\/strong><\/a>, author of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Great-American-Hot-Dog-Book\/dp\/1423600223\/ref=asc_df_1423600223\/?tag=hyprod-20&amp;linkCode=df0&amp;hvadid=312104252832&amp;hvpos=&amp;hvnetw=g&amp;hvrand=3080566775507806252&amp;hvpone=&amp;hvptwo=&amp;hvqmt=&amp;hvdev=c&amp;hvdvcmdl=&amp;hvlocint=&amp;hvlocphy=9030464&amp;hvtargid=pla-546433908366&amp;psc=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>The Great American Hot Dog Book<\/strong><\/a>, she declared &#8220;<em>I&#8217;m not averse to different toppings but frankly, I draw the line at spaghettios and fruit loops<\/em>.&#8221;\u00a0 She&#8217;s not kidding when she says she&#8217;s not averse to different toppings.\u00a0 Her magnificent tome includes recipes for about a hundred hot dogs and their toppings from across the fruited plain, recipes she tested herself.\u00a0 Throughout the process, she found herself &#8220;<em>continually amazed at the ingenuity, creativity and proclivity for turning the humble hot dog into gloriously good eating<\/em>.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_57598\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-57598\" style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Clowndog02-scaled.jpeg?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-57598 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 750px; font-family: Verdana;\">In 2007 when Becky wrote The Great American Hot Dog Book, hot dog toppings had already begun their evolution (some would say descent) into a catch-as-catch-can melange of ingredients combinations.\u00a0 Among the more er&#8230;interesting hot dogs she wrote about and tested in her home kitchen was Hawaii&#8217;s puka dog, essentially a smoked Polish sausage stuffed into a hole drilled into a freshly-baked bun where the sausage shares space with such tropical relishes as a pineapple-mango.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">Understanding that one person&#8217;s &#8220;weird&#8221; is another person&#8217;s &#8220;gourmet,&#8221; Hawaii&#8217;s puka dog may not even be in the running for most weird hot dog.\u00a0 In fact, compared with a list of <a href=\"https:\/\/affotd.com\/2013\/01\/16\/americas-strangest-most-terrifying-hot-dogs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>America&#8217;s strangest, most terrifying hot dogs<\/strong><\/a>, the puka dog is rather tame.\u00a0 Terrifying might be an apt term for a chocolate eclair hot dog, a brownie corn dog and the &#8220;WTF is this&#8221; hot dog where raw spaghetti is inserted through chopped hot dogs and boiled.\u00a0 Fruit loops and spaghettio&#8217;s are almost pedestrian in comparison&#8230;almost.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_57599\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-57599\" style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Clowndog03-scaled.jpeg?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-57599 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 750px; font-family: Verdana;\">Fruit Loops and Spaghettios aren&#8217;t the only &#8220;gourmet&#8221; toppings with which creative diners can adorn their hot dogs at Clowndog.\u00a0 The list of &#8220;New Mexican Favorites&#8221; includes calabasitas, chicharrones, pinto beans and of course, chopped green chile.\u00a0 Under the menu&#8217;s &#8220;Freak Show&#8221; section are such toppings as coconut shavings, peanut butter and grape jelly (BOTVOLR, are you reading this?), chocolate sauce and golden raisins.\u00a0 Truth or Dare advocates might choose truth rather than try combinations from this section of the menu.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">Clowndog&#8217;s menu isn&#8217;t solely about having its guests do a double-take.\u00a0 The &#8220;Clowndog Creations&#8221; section of the menu includes two hot dogs which made it onto The Great American Hot Dog Book as their state&#8217;s representatives.\u00a0 More &#8220;normal&#8221; toppings such as sauerkraut, yellow mustard, onions and grated Cheddar are also available.\u00a0 If ketchup is on the menu it escaped my notice, maybe deliberately.\u00a0 Build your own options apply to more than your hot dog toppings.\u00a0 You can also choose your dog: all beef, turkey, house-made veggie and bratwurst.\u00a0 Your choice of buns are: traditional, Chicago-style poppy, gluten-free and corn dog.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_57600\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-57600\" style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Clowndog04-scaled.jpeg?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-57600 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 750px; font-family: Verdana;\">As might be expected from a restaurant named Clowndog Hot Dog Parlor, the ambiance bespeaks of owner Rich &#8220;Ringmaster&#8221; Bartel&#8217;s love of the circus. \u00a0The restaurant is teeming with circus posters and art. \u00a0The front dining room opens up into an expansive covered patio which adjoins an exterior sitting area where patrons can enjoy the heat of the day. \u00a0On display on a mural on an exterior wall is a humongous hot dog fronting the restaurant&#8217;s name. \u00a0The Zia sun&#8217;s rays radiate out from the first &#8220;o&#8221; in Clowndog.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">From among the hot dogs (and admittedly we haven&#8217;t tried them all) on The Great American Hot Dog Book, our favorite is one that until just a few years ago you could find only in the great state of Arizona. \u00a0That would be the <em><strong>Sonoran Dog<\/strong><\/em> which Becky describes as &#8220;<em>a heavenly Southwestern rendition of the humble hot dog<\/em>.&#8221; \u00a0Alas, Clowndog&#8217;s version was not served on a crusty bolillo roll, one of the defining characteristics of a true Sonoran hot dog. \u00a0And instead of the bacon being wrapped around the hot dog, bacon crumbles mingled with other ingredients (pinto beans, onions, tomatoes, flame-roasted jalape\u00f1o salsa, ranch dressing yellow mustard). \u00a0If you&#8217;re looking for Hermosillo authenticity, this hot dog doesn&#8217;t have it. \u00a0If you&#8217;re looking for a tasty facsimile, this hot dog should do the trick. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_57601\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-57601\" style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Clowndog05-scaled.jpeg?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-57601 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 750px; font-family: Verdana;\">Similarly, the <em><strong>Chicago hot dog<\/strong><\/em> (sport peppers, dill pickles, tomato slices, diced onions, neon green sweet relish, yellow mustard and a dash of celery salt on a poppy seed bun) may not be exactly like the one you&#8217;d find in the Windy City (or even at Albuquerque&#8217;s own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nmgastronome.com\/?p=54894\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>AK Pizza<\/strong><\/a>), but it&#8217;s good enough to sate my Chicago born-and-bred bride&#8217;s cravings. \u00a0Frankly the most obvious absence is the Vienna all-beef frank used throughout the Windy City. \u00a0The Vienna beef frank is quite a bit more plump and assertively seasoned than Clowndog&#8217;s frank. \u00a0Completely assembled, a Chicago hot dog is said to be &#8220;<em>dragged through the garden<\/em>&#8221; due to its many toppings. \u00a0Request ketchup at any Chicago hot dog emporium and you might find yourself being dragged outside for a well-deserved thrashing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">The backside of the menu lists appetizers, big top dishes and salads, sideshow side dishes and desserts. \u00a0Why have fries or onion rings when you can have the <em><strong>bratwurst plate<\/strong><\/em> (a plumb brat served with a healthy dose of apple sauerkraut, fresh cut fries and a side of stone ground mustard)? \u00a0Ketchup does have its place at Clowndog&#8211;with the fries (though my preference is the stone ground mustard). \u00a0The fries have the near perfect textural combination of crispy exterior and light, fluffy interior. \u00a0The apple sauerkraut has the lip-pursing qualities we appreciate in sauerkraut while the brats is smoky and garlicky.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_57602\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-57602\" style=\"width: 525px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Clowndog06-scaled.jpeg?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-57602 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 525px; font-family: Verdana;\">There are two desserts on the menu&#8211;chocolate dipped frozen bananas and chocolate dipped cheesecake, both available with chopped peanuts, shredded coconut, chopped walnuts or all three. \u00a0Conceptually <em><strong>chocolate dipped frozen bananas<\/strong><\/em> sound like a good idea, but only if the bananas lean toward being ripe and sweet. \u00a0The banana we had was redolent of a green banana meaning it wasn&#8217;t especially sweet, had a firm texture and a bitter taste. \u00a0No amount of chocolate could mask those qualities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">In 2023 Yelp compiled a list of America&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yelp.com\/article\/yelps-most-outrageous-hot-dogs-2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>most outrageous hotdogs<\/strong><\/a>. \u00a0On that list was a dog called the Tattooed Lady from Clowndog. \u00a0Here&#8217;s what Yelp had to say about the Tattooed Lady: \u00a0&#8220;<em><span class=\" bold__09f24__doqfA display--inline__09f24__c6N_k  border-color--default__09f24__NPAKY\">Froot Loops are not something you\u2019d expect on a hot dog. <\/span>But at this circus-themed spot, they\u2019re one of the many eye-popping surprises found on the Tattooed Lady\u2014maybe the most unique item you\u2019ll ever have.
