even hot dogs and apple pie have their detractors.\u00a0 Ditto for burgers, mashed potatoes, fried chicken or any of the foods named by respondents to &#8220;most popular food in America&#8221; polls such as <a href=\"https:\/\/bestlifeonline.com\/news-most-popular-food\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>this one.<\/strong><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">Perhaps no country&#8217;s national identity is more inextricably tied to one food than the identity of Laos is linked to sticky rice.\u00a0 \u00a0Yes, far more than pho is considered the definitive food of Vietnam. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">\u00a0Sticky, or \u201cglutinous,\u201d rice (despite the fact that it&#8217;s actually gluten-free) has been growing in mainland Southeast Asia for at least 4,000 years.\u00a0 \u00a0The term glutinous is actually used to describe its sticky texture rather than the presence of gluten.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">While sticky rice has been largely replaced across the region by varieties of non-glutinous &#8220;white&#8221; rice, sticky rice is still the primary staple in Laos, a country slightly larger than the state of Utah.\u00a0 \u00a0In Laos, per-capita sticky rice consumption is the highest on earth at more than 377 pounds per year. While grilled chicken might be the primary draw (at least for non-Lao diners), sticky rice is served alongside several chicken dishes and as a dessert with mangoes.\u00a0 You can also order a scoop of sticky rice by itself.\u00a0 By the way, because sticky rice takes longer to digest than white rice does, it sates hunger for longer periods.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">Currently offering only take-out service (thank you Cabrona virus), this Journal Center staple can teach fast food joints a thing or two.\u00a0 Place your order at a counter and working with the &#8220;hand is quicker than the eye&#8221; font-family: Verdana;\">The other reason, of course, is the food.\u00a0 My Kim and I have had only the chicken, but we enjoyed it very much.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t look for chicken breasts at Sticky Rice.\u00a0 It&#8217;s all about dark meat&#8211;tender and juicy leg and thigh meat with grilled, slightly caramelized skin.\u00a0 Because the individual chicken pieces are all rather smallish, you&#8217;ll appreciate having the sticky rice to fill you up.\u00a0 My Kim had the <em><strong>three-quarter legs<\/strong><\/em> plate served with a side of spicy sauce.\u00a0 She&#8217;s the chicken aficionado in the family so take her word for it that the chicken is terrific.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">There didn&#8217;t seem to be much difference between the three-quarter legs plate my Kim ordered and my order of <em><strong>two-quarter lemongrass chicken<\/strong><\/em> (two legs and two thighs).\u00a0 We literally couldn&#8217;t discern any difference in flavor until I doused mine with all the spicy sauce.\u00a0 Still, on a &#8220;do-over&#8221;
