font-family: Verdana;\">Most of us know someone like Lucy Van Pelt, the irascible, bossy, highly opinionated diva in the syndicated Peanuts comic strip. \u00a0 Since her debut in 1952, Lucy has been the perpetrator of two long-running gags.\u00a0 One involves her holding the football (ostensibly so that Charlie Brown can kick a field goal or extra point) and pulling the ball away because she doesn&#8217;t want Charlie Brown to get it dirty.\u00a0 The second gag parodies the lemonade stand operated by many young children under spacious skies.\u00a0 Instead of a lemonade stand, she operates a psychiatric booth where she offers advice and psychoanalysis for a nickel.\u00a0 The &#8220;advice&#8221; is often worthless though on occasion, she actually dispenses a pearl of wisdom.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">Lucy Van Pelt has nothing on Tony Caputo and his friends in Salt Lake City.\u00a0 Every Saturday morning for years, Tony and his friends, seven sagacious septuagenarians, would meet at Tony&#8217;s eponymous deli where they&#8217;d solve all the world&#8217;s ills.\u00a0 To amp up excitement in their lives, they decided to share their wisdom with people in dire need. \u00a0 Caputo got a booth at the nearby farmers market where the seven could dispense their counsel.\u00a0 He put up a large banner and hung it up: &#8220;Old Coots Giving Advice &#8211; It&#8217;s Probably Bad Advice, But It&#8217;s Free.&#8221;\u00a0 The booth became so popular that CBS Sunday Morning featured the Solomon-like seventy-year-olds in a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/video\/the-valuable-advice-of-old-coots\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hilarious segment<\/a><\/strong> of the show.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_58365\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-58365\" style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/TonyCaputo10-scaled.jpeg?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-58365 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 750px; font-family: Verdana;\">Over the years I heard so much about Tony Caputo from my favorite food author and peerless culinary researcher\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Becky-Mercuri\/e\/B001JRXWVW%3Fref=dbs_a_mng_rwt_scns_share\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Becky Mercuri<\/strong> <\/a>that when he passed away suddenly on March 10, 2021, it felt a lot like losing a friend.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll let Becky take it from here: &#8220;<em>Tony Caputo not only founded one of the best Italian delis in the United States &#8211; he was one heck of a nice guy. Anyone who was lucky enough to chat with him was the beneficiary of both his charm and his extensive knowledge and enthusiasm for quality Italian food. Tony wasn&#8217;t in the deli business just to earn a living &#8211; he truly loved it &#8211; and given the opportunity, he could talk even a starving dog off a salami wagon. By the early 1920s, the Caputos were able to open a small grocery store, a venture that turned out to be fortuitous for later generations of the Caputo family<\/em>.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">&#8220;<em>Tony renovated the old Firestone Tire and Rubber Company building adjacent to Salt Lake City&#8217;s once-dilapidated Pioneer Park, and two years later, he purchased another building. As part of his renovation and development efforts, Tony enticed other businesses into that area which today includes a farmers market, a fish company, and a bakery<\/em>.&#8221;\u00a0 Today Tony Caputo&#8217;s Deli is a megalithic complex, a one-stop paradise for food lovers.\u00a0 As we found out during our two visits, you can spend hours perusing aisles of tempting products.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_58291\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-58291\" style=\"width: 525px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/TonyCaputo04-scaled.jpeg?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-58291 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 525px; font-family: Verdana;\">Before you set out to explore the enormous complex, you&#8217;re well advised to have lunch first.\u00a0 First-time visitors should order the sandwich named for the deli&#8217;s founder&#8211;The Caputo.\u00a0 Tony gave Becky the instructions for The Caputo which includes the following on their published menu: Prosciutto, mortadella, salami, provolone, lettuce, tomato, olive oil and balsamic. &#8220;<em>He further specified a crusty 6 &#8211; 8 inch peasant bread roll, balsamic vinegar such as Antica Italia, and accompanied by Sicilian marinated olives and pepperoncini<\/em>.\u00a0 As Becky so eloquently wrote: &#8220;<em>It&#8217;s a tribute to the Caputo&#8217;s Italian heritage and a special treat for diners on the prowl for the best in Utah<\/em>.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\"><strong>27 August 2021<\/strong>: During our foodie forays into dining destinations across the country, we rarely dine at any one restaurant more than once during each visit.\u00a0 For Caputo&#8217;s we made an exception.\u00a0 In fact, after having visited on the Monday of our stay, we couldn&#8217;t wait to return.\u00a0 My Kim would probably have divorced me if I&#8217;d have taken her to Caputo&#8217;s every day of our visit, but the temptation was there.\u00a0 Caputo&#8217;s is quite simply the best deli I&#8217;ve visited since my youthful explorations in New England.\u00a0 A large part of that is <em><strong>The Caputo<\/strong><\/em>, an Italian sandwich as good or better than any Italian sandwich I&#8217;ve ever had. \u00a0One of the things that makes this sandwich so special is the bread to meats to condiments ratio. \u00a0Each is in perfect proportion to complement the other. \u00a0No one meat, cheese or condiment dominates. \u00a0All work together like an orchestra that plays flawless notes on your taste buds. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_58289\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-58289\" style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/TonyCaputo02-scaled.jpeg?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-58289 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 750px; font-family: Verdana;\"><strong>2 June 2023<\/strong>: There are a number of salads on Caputo&#8217;s menu, but had we visited for a month of Sundays we probably would have ordered the <em><strong>antipasto<\/strong><\/em> (mix of cured Italian meats, cheeses, mild giardiniera, olive oil &amp; balsamic, mixed greens) every single time. \u00a0It&#8217;s quite simply the very best we&#8217;ve ever had. \u00a0Available as a side or large portion (a must), it&#8217;s replete with sundry sumptuousness. \u00a0Unlike &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/culinarylore.com\/cooking-terms:what-is-a-composed-salad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>composed&#8221; salads<\/strong><\/a> in which ingredients &#8220;<em>are\u00a0conscientiously arranged, whether in a pile or side by side, on a plate or in a bowl, with attention to complimentary flavors and colors<\/em>,&#8221; this antipasto resembles a bowl of scrap ingredients thrown together. \u00a0It may not win any awards for esthetic qualities, but it&#8217;ll blow you away with the high quality of every ingredient. \u00a0In our three visits, we&#8217;ve found that the best way to eat it is to just stick your fork in there and extricate whatever it pulls out. \u00a0Whether some type of cheese, meat or pickled vegetable, it&#8217;ll be fantastic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; the colloquial way of saying meatball sandwich in Massachusetts. \u00a0For forty years it&#8217;s been my quest to find one as good as those in Boston&#8217;s fabled North End. \u00a0Indiana Jones had an easier time finding the Ark of the Covenant. \u00a0At Caputo&#8217;s, my quest was fulfilled. \u00a0Caputo&#8217;s <em><strong>The Meatball<\/strong><\/em> (m<span class=\"info-desc\">eatballs, marinara sauce, parmesan and provolone cheeses) is everything that defines an outstanding meatball grinder, sub, sandwich, etc.. \u00a0That means a sandwich so warm and comforting that you feel as if you&#8217;re enveloped in your grandmother&#8217;s loving arms. \u00a0That means house-made meatballs, each as big as a golf ball, each covered in a perfectly seasoned sauce. \u00a0That means the type of messy and sloppy that says you&#8217;ll be wearing that sauce on your face and clothing. It means being tempted to use a knife and fork even at the risk of losing your man card. \u00a0This is the meatball sandwich of which dreams are made!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; opened my eyes to a wealth of cultural and culinary opportunities. \u00a0It was probably akin to how an alien from outer space would feel if deposited in New York City. \u00a0Among my favorite discoveries, one I had never even heard of in New Mexico, was pastrami. \u00a0I couldn&#8217;t get enough of the stuff and visited delis throughout New England just to try their version. \u00a0Over the years I&#8217;ve also had great pastrami in Illinois, California and even Albuquerque (thank you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nmgastronome.com\/?p=84\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Joe Rodriguez<\/strong><\/a>). \u00a0I never thought I&#8217;d find great pastrami in Utah. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">Frankly it shouldn&#8217;t have come as a surprise. \u00a0When it comes to meats and condiments nestled in the most delicious sandwich rolls ever, you can&#8217;t touch Joe Caputo&#8217;s. \u00a0The pastrami sandwich was reminiscent of the dozens of sandwiches I devoured during my time on the East Coast. \u00a0Nestled within Caputo&#8217;s magnificent bread are wisps of fatty and lean pastrami blanketing Provolone and smeared in a slightly tangy mustard. \u00a0This sandwich transported me back to Boston and my first experience with pastrami. \u00a0If we lived in Salt Lake City, this would be one of my go-tos at Joe Caputo&#8217;s, the only restaurant in Utah we&#8217;ve visited three times.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_63795\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-63795\" style=\"width: 641px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-63795 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 641px; font-family: Verdana;\">As you approach Tony Caputo&#8217;s in its downtown dwelling, you might be intimidated by the sheer size of this megalithic complex. \u00a0The second you step inside, awe and wonder will replace any intimidation you might have felt. \u00a0There&#8217;s just so much to see, so many options to explore. \u00a0You&#8217;ll probably dispense of any plans you may have had for the afternoon to spend your time perusing the aisles. \u00a0If you don&#8217;t first enjoy one of the aforementioned sandwiches, you&#8217;re at risk of blowing your budget purchasing Italian comestibles you probably can&#8217;t find at home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">To your immediate right of the deli case in which salads are displayed in all their delicious glory, you&#8217;ll espy every chocoholic&#8217;s dream, aisles of fine chocolates, the type of which pair so well with cheese. Caputo\u2019s offers an expansive collection of <a href=\"https:\/\/caputos.com\/chocolate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>craft chocolate<\/strong><\/a> from around the globe, where the single unifying theme is cacao beans of respectable provenance. \u00a0Small-batch chocolates from such unlikely countries as Papua New Guinea and Vietnam share space with chocolates from Utah. \u00a0Not even Willy Wonka&#8217;s factory offers such chocolate decadence and temptation. Caputo&#8217;s is actually home to the largest selection of craft chocolate in the country, with more than 300 different bars to choose from. font-family: Verdana;\">Food writers tend to overuse the term &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/arts-culture\/everything-you-wanted-to-know-about-food-and-sex-but-were-afraid-to-ask-94338509\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>foodgasm<\/strong><\/a>&#8221; font-family: Verdana;\">When my Kim and I first visited the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insider.com\/how-traditional-english-cheddar-cheese-made-aged-caves-2019-9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Cheddar Gorge Cheese Company<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0in Somerset, England, we discovered cave-aged cheese which had been stored in a cave whose constant temperature and humidity&#8211;nearly 98%&#8211;provided perfect conditions in which to mature cloth-bound cheese. \u00a0I thought then and there that maybe life as a troglodyte turophile wouldn&#8217;t be too bad. \u00a0That sentiment was revisited when we espied\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">Caputo&#8217;s state-of-the-art cheese cave in which large wheels of cheese age in ideal high-humidity conditions. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">Caputo&#8217;s makes its own fresh mozzarella and burrata and works with area cheesemakers to wash and age their cheeses. \u00a0Many of Caputo&#8217;s cheeses have won national awards&#8211;including one the village of Cheddar might envy. \u00a0Caputo&#8217;s house Cheddar is aged using bandages soaked in butter and duck fat. \u00a0 That Cheddar is aged for 8.5 months and has a flavor reminiscent of the English Cheddar with which we were quite acquainted. \u00a0There really is a discernible difference.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_58295\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-58295\" style=\"width: 525px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/TonyCaputo08-scaled.jpeg?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-58295 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 525px;
