font-family: Verdana;\">To New Mexicans, there is nothing as thoroughly soul-satisfying and utterly delicious as our ubiquitous green chile cheeseburger. \u00a0We have a fierce pride in that most simplistic, but explosive, flavor-blessed union of a thick, juicy beef patty grilled over an open flame or sizzled on a griddle then blanketed in cheese and topped with taste bud awakening, tongue tingling, olfactory arousing green chile.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">New Mexicans throughout the Land of Enchantment\u2019s 33 counties celebrated July 22nd, 2009 with the gusto normally reserved for a Lobo or Aggie victory. \u00a0We basked in the glory of one of our own upstanding citizens vanquishing an audacious interloper from New York City in a green chile cheeseburger \u201cthrowdown.\u201d \u00a0On that fateful summer day, the Food Network aired for the first time, the tasty triumph of the <a title=\"Buckhorn Tavern\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nmgastronome.com\/?p=164\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Buckhorn Tavern\u2019s<\/a> Bobby Olguin over \u201cIron Chef\u201d Bobby Flay. \u00a0Our chests swelled with pride as the Food Network confirmed what all of us know\u2013when it comes to the green chile cheeseburger, New Mexico is the best in the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">In recognition of Olguin\u2019s victory, Governor Bill Richardson declared Friday July 24, 2009 \u201cBuckhorn Tavern Day.\u201d \u201c<em>Congratulations to the Buckhorn Tavern and its owner Bobby Olguin for the impressive victory over one of the world\u2019s most recognized chefs<\/em>,\u201d Governor Richardson said. \u201c<em>Through his win, Mr. Olguin did an excellent job of showcasing one of New Mexico\u2019s culinary treasures, the green chile cheeseburger<\/em>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6091\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6091\" style=\"width: 444px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.academyofdogobedience.com\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6091 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 444px; font-family: Verdana;\">Not one to ever let an opportunity pass by for showcasing the Land of Enchantment, Governor Richardson called for a statewide green chile cheeseburger challenge to be held at the New Mexico State Fair on September 22nd, 2009. \u00a0\u201c<em>The Buckhorn\u2019s victory sparked excitement all across New Mexico and triggered debate throughout the state on what makes the perfect green chile cheeseburger<\/em>,\u201d Governor Richardson declared. \u201c<em>With so many great choices and everyone swearing by their favorite, I thought it was time to put them to test, head-to-head. There\u2019s nothing like a little fun and friendly competition to showcase the best from around New Mexico<\/em>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">Twenty of New Mexico\u2019s finest purveyors of green chile cheeseburger excellence picked up the governor\u2019s gauntlet for the inaugural Governor\u2019s Green Chile Cheeseburger Challenge. \u00a0In a blind taste test in which a fresh burger was delivered to their table every five minutes, a panel of five lucky judges evaluated twenty burgers using a criteria of taste, balance of ingredients and appearance. \u00a0Each contestant was required to use New Mexico green chile (as if anything else could possibly do).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">When the smoke had cleared and the judges\u2019 seared tongues had cooled, Badlands Burgers from Grants was announced as the winner of the inaugural Governor\u2019s Challenge, earning acclaim as New Mexico\u2019s best green chile cheeseburger. \u00a0Along with Bobby Olguin\u2019s Buckhorn Tavern (which didn\u2019t compete in the Governor\u2019s Challenge), Badlands Burgers anchors the New Mexico Tourism\u2019s <a title=\"New Mexico Green Chile Cheeseburger Trail\" href=\"http:\/\/www.newmexico.org\/greenchilecheeseburger\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Green Chile Cheeseburger Trail<\/a>, a listing of the Land of Enchantment\u2019s most outstanding green chile cheeseburger restaurants, drive-ins, diners, dives, joints, cafes, roadside stands and bowling alleys.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6151\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6151\" style=\"width: 355px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.salvadorphoto.com\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6151 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 355px; font-size: 10pt;\">I had the great privilege of helping develop the inaugural New Mexico Green Chile Cheeseburger Trail along with the scintillating, four-time James Beard award-winning author <a title=\"Cooking With The Jamisons\" href=\"http:\/\/cookingwiththejamisons.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cheryl Alters Jamison<\/a>; the brilliant\u00a0<a title=\"Edible Santa Fe\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ediblecommunities.com\/santafe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kate Manchester<\/a>, publisher of Edible Santa Fe; and one of New Mexico\u2019s finest ambassadors, <a title=\"New Mexico Tourism Department\" href=\"http:\/\/www.newmexico.org\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Martin Leger<\/a>, the advertising manager for the New Mexico Department of Tourism. \u00a0We reviewed dozens of potential candidates with votes cast by some 8,000 people for inclusion into the inaugural Trail. \u00a0Competition was very keen with many worthy candidates being nominated by aficionados of the state\u2019s best burger establishments. \u00a0It was like selecting the best and brightest stars on a clear, cold New Mexico winter night.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">Between the four of us, we had voraciously consumed green chile cheeseburgers at many of the candidates as well as at several others not nominated but worthy of inclusion so we were definitely qualified for the task at hand. \u00a0Ultimately we narrowed down the number of selections to what we believe are 48 of the very best green chile cheeseburgers from throughout the Land of Enchantment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">Both the <a title=\"Manny's Buckhorn Tavern\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nmgastronome.com\/?p=164\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Buckhorn Tavern<\/a> and Badlands Burgers were &#8220;grandfathered&#8221; in as was New Mexico&#8217;s iconic institution <a title=\"LotaBurger\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nmgastronome.com\/?p=219\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LotaBurger<\/a>. \u00a0Other purveyors of green chile cheeseburger perfection on the trail include the <a title=\"Bobcat Bite\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nmgastronome.com\/?p=81\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bobcat Bite<\/a>, selected in 2007 by <em>Bon Appetit<\/em> magazine as America&#8217;s very best burger; the <a title=\"The Owl Cafe\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nmgastronome.com\/?p=176\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Owl Cafe,<\/a> selected in 2003 by <em>Epicurious.com<\/em> as one of the top ten burgers in America; Clancy\u2019s Irish Cantina in Farmington, selected by <em>Food Network<\/em> magazine as the one burger in New Mexico you absolutely have to try; and other burgers not nearly as famous, but all with a delicious story to tell.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;
