This&#8211;one of the most\u00a0 diminutive among all words&#8211;can say and mean so much.\u00a0 Depending on the context, &#8220;Ay&#8221; is used to express such emotions as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&lt;<strong>happiness: <\/strong>think &#8220;\u00a1<a href=\"https:\/\/tenor.com\/es\/ver\/ay-chihuahua-felonious-gru-steve-carell-despicable-me-wide-eyes-gif-16561889\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Ay, Chihuahua<\/em><\/strong><\/a>&#8221; when Despicable Me patriarch Gru espies a black villain suit he covets;<\/li>\n<li><strong>surprise:<\/strong> <em>\u00a1Ay, Cabron!<\/em> <em>what are you doing home in the middle of the day<\/em>?;<\/li>\n<li><strong>exasperation: <\/strong><em>\u00a1Ay, Que Lastima!<\/em><\/li>\n<li>&lt;<strong>pain or dismay: <\/strong>Bart Simpson&#8217;s \u00a1<em>Ay, caramba<\/em>!&#8221; when he saw his parents having sex.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The versatility of &#8220;ay&#8221; is virtually unparalleled (though you can usually tell what meaning or mood a speaker is ascribing to that oh, so simple and powerful expression).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_60917\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-60917\" style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-60917 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 750px; may preface other words in place of curse words in order to make a phrase sound less harsh.\u00a0 In essence &#8220;\u00a1<em>Ay, caramba<\/em>!&#8221; and &#8220;\u00a1<em>Ay, Chihuahua<\/em>!&#8221; are Mexican equivalents of &#8220;<em>oh, shoot<\/em>,&#8221; &#8220;<em>darn<\/em>&#8221; or &#8220;<em>shucks<\/em>.&#8221;\u00a0 Perhaps the most famous use of the term is in the immortal Mexican song Cielito Lindo whose refrain exhorts &#8220;<em>Ay, ay, ay, ay, canta y no llores<\/em>.&#8221;\u00a0 Some English dictionaries translate this as &#8220;<em>oh, oh, oh, oh, sing and don&#8217;t cry,<\/em>&#8221; but that just doesn&#8217;t sound right.\u00a0 More recently, another song &#8220;\u00a1<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vZUAlW93xoU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Ay, Mi Mexico<\/strong><\/a>,&#8221; <\/em>earned a Latin Grammy Award for Best Regional Mexican song in 2012. &#8220;\u00a1<em>Ay&#8221; <\/em>in this song expresses joy, awe and wonder at just how blessed the beautiful nation of Mexico is.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_60918\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-60918\" style=\"width: 577px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-60918 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 577px; in honor of her Mexican home state.\u00a0 Martin, who was born and raised in the Mexican state of Sinaloa countered with the proposed name &#8220;\u00a1Ay, Mi Mexico!,&#8221; as a way to honor their beloved home nation.\u00a0 The name fits!\u00a0 Ay, Mi Mexico! opened its doors in early June, 2022 on Menaul just west of San Mateo.\u00a0 Its next door neighbor is <b>El Chamo Arabe<\/b>, a relatively new restaurant that has garnered popular and critical acclaim.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s hoping (and betting) Ay, Mi Mexico! will be similarly welcomed by Duke City Diners.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_60919\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-60919\" style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-60919 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 750px; Visiting \u00a1Ay, Mi Mexico! is like visiting their home.\u00a0 Hospitality abounds. The restaurant is beautifully appointed with a colorful Mexican motif that bespeaks of pride in the owners&#8217; homeland.\u00a0 Rustic Mexican clay cookware and plates seem to make the food just a bit more delicious.\u00a0 Soothing Mexican music is piped into the dining room. The restaurant&#8217;s name is &#8220;sub-titled&#8221; with &#8220;Grill &amp; Seafood Restaurant,&#8221; an indication of the menu&#8217;s versatility.\u00a0 Tatiana explained that Chihuahua is renowned for cattle ranches while mariscos are a specialty in Sinaloa.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_60920\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-60920\" style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-60920 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 750px; font-family: Verdana;\">g your reading glasses; the print is rather small and unless you&#8217;re a graduate of Evelyn Woods Speed Reading Dynamics, it may take quite a bit of time to peruse through all three pages.\u00a0 Fortunately, every item is described in both English and Spanish.\u00a0 You&#8217;ll find intriguing options that aren&#8217;t commonly found in Duke City area Mexican restaurants.\u00a0 As always, these are the items I encourage you to order.\u00a0 Not only might you expand your repertoire of Mexican food favorites, you&#8217;ll thank me for my advice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>24 June 2022<\/strong>: As you&#8217;re perusing the menu, your server (or maybe Tatiana herself) will ferry over a basket of <em><strong>chips<\/strong> <\/em>with a bowl of incendiary <em><strong>salsa<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 The salsa features two fiery peppers&#8211;Serrano chiles and jalapenos along with garlic and tomatoes.\u00a0 Texturally it&#8217;s somewhere between thin and thick which means scooping rather than dipping the low-in-salt, crispy and fresh chips.\u00a0 My Kim found the salsa too piquant, but those of us who believe pain is a flavor won&#8217;t have any problem with it.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_60957\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-60957\" style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-60957 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 750px; A molcajete is essentially a seasoned stone mortar meticulously carved out of a single rock of vesicular basalt by a skilled artisan. Not only are they esthetic, they are highly functional, used for crushing and grinding spices and as serving vessels. That\u2019s how \u00a1Ay, Mi Mexico! uses them. The minute you place your order for one of the molcajete dishes, the round, three-legged mortar goes into the oven before your meal is prepared. Your entire meal will be served in the cavity of the molcajete which retains heat for the entire duration of your meal. Restaurants called parrillas which specialize in grilled foods also grill seafood (mariscos) and poultry. Particularly popular in Argentina and Colombia, the mixed grill called Parrillada Mixta (or just parrillada) can be any combination of grilled meats, poultry and seafood. My inaugural experience with parrillada in San Antonio, Texas left such a huge impression on my taste buds that I behave like Pavlov\u2019s dogs upon seeing it on a menu. More often than not, I\u2019m left disappointed because my very first parrillada set a nonpareil standard for excellence.<\/p>\n<p>At \u00a1Ay, Mi Mexico! the <em><strong>parillada para dos<\/strong><\/em> (grilled meat skillet for two) is a platter brimming with beef chops, rib chops, queso fundido, charro beans, baked potatoes, grilled onions and grilled jalape\u00f1os. \u00a0As with the molcajete dishes, it&#8217;s large enough to feed a small family. \u00a0Carnivores, in particular, will enjoy sating their meat-loving bent. \u00a0Especially delicious are the beef ribs, similar to\u00a0Korean-style barbecue ribs. These flanken-style short ribs are about six-inches in length, each strip containing at least two rib bones. Gnawing around those bones and extricating the sweet meat is a journey into deliciousness. are excellent. \u00a0Surprisingly, so are the <em><strong>charro beans<\/strong><\/em>, usually a take-it-or-leave-it side dish at other restaurants. \u00a0Topping the reason for &#8220;leaving it&#8221; is underdone beans&#8211;not the case at \u00a1Ay, Mi Mexico!. \u00a0Kissed with cilantro and replete with little wieners, these are campfire worthy charro beans.<\/p>\n<p><strong>23 July 2023: \u00a0<\/strong>My friend John Martin, a youthful septuagenarian, \u00a0makes no bones about it. \u00a0His favorite food (along with peanut butter and jelly sandwiches) is burgers. \u00a0When he took his lovely bride Lynn to a steakhouse, she had a filet. \u00a0He had a burger. \u00a0It no longer surprises me that he is so monogamous about dining. \u00a0When my Kim and I introduced him and Lynn to \u00a1Ay, Mi Mexico!
