table<\/em>&#8221; upon which &#8220;<em>you could serve up a whole barbecued steer<\/em>.&#8221; \u00a0Jed&#8217;s nephew Jethro who graduated at the top of his glass&#8230;&#8221;<em>by a good foot<\/em>&#8221; found out from a friend that the room in which the fancy eatin&#8217; table was centered was called a &#8220;<em>billy-yard room<\/em>.&#8221; \u00a0Ergo, the table was a &#8220;<em>billy-yard table<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_61479\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-61479\" style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-61479 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 750px; &#8220;<em>rascal<\/em>&#8221; (a rhinoceros) mounted on the wall. \u00a0&#8220;<em>Judging from the size of his head, he must have been monstrous big<\/em>&#8221; Uncle Jed observed, &#8220;<em>I reckon that&#8217;s why they had to build a extra strong table<\/em>.&#8221; \u00a0That fancy eatin&#8217; table was featured in several episodes of the Beverly Hills, a hilarious comedy about a\u00a0backwoods family from the hills of the Ozarks, who move to posh Beverly Hills, California, after striking oil on their land. \u00a0Pool cues were used as &#8220;<em>pot passers<\/em>&#8221; to &#8220;<em>pass the vittles around<\/em>.&#8221; \u00a0Bones from their food were put in the table&#8217;s pockets. \u00a0It wasn&#8217;t until season four that the Clampetts figured out the table could also be used to play a game called pool and it was played with the pot-passers.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_65960\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-65960\" style=\"width: 525px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-65960 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 525px; As such, the various games are referred to as carom billiards, or pocketless billiards. In contrast, pool tables (or pocket billiards tables) have six pockets, including pockets in each corner and one in the middle of each long side. \u00a0So much for using the pockets on the &#8220;billy-yard&#8221; tables to deposit bones. \u00a0It&#8217;s all in good fun as legions of Beverly Hillbillies fans will attest.<\/p>\n<p>As we strode into Rio Rancho&#8217;s Slate Street Billiards Bar &amp; Grille, we espied enough fancy eatin&#8217; tables to host dozens of diners. \u00a0Patrons \u00a0weren&#8217;t eating, but were using pot-passers to play pool. \u00a0A few guests were seated around less formal eatin&#8217; tables enjoying bar fare. \u00a0In addition to sixteen Gold Crown pool tables, Slate Street offers darts, shuffleboard and Jenga (on a giant hardwood level). \u00a0A south-facing patio provides sun-shielding, dog-friendly tables for diners who prefer their enchantment to be out-of-doors.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_61480\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-61480\" style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-61480 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 750px; if you will, but it&#8217;s bar food prepared at a high-level. \u00a0In July, 2022, for example, Slate Street Billiards was one of nearly a dozen competitors vying for first place at Albuquerque&#8217;s Mac and Cheese Festival. \u00a0Nearly 1,110 guests enjoyed a taste of each competitor&#8217;s mac and cheese. \u00a0When all was said and done, Slate Street Billiards had earned the silver spoon denoting first place. \u00a0Two months later, Slate Street Billiards was one of seven competitors contending for the Green Chile Cheeseburger Challenge title at the New Mexico State Fair. \u00a0Slate Street Billiards was edged out &#8220;<em>by an extremely razor thin margin<\/em>&#8221; according to the Albuquerque Journal. \u00a0The winner was legendary\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nmgastronome.com\/?p=7837\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Sparky&#8217;s Burgers<\/strong><\/a> from Hatch.<\/p>\n<p>When you stride into Slate Street Billiards you might not notice the awards earned by the bar food. \u00a0In addition to its first place finish at the Mac and Cheese Festival and the runner-up at the Green Chile Cheeseburger Challenge, Slate Street Billiards has earned three awards at the Roadrunner Food Bank&#8217;s annual Souper Bowl. \u00a0 In 2023, it earned the Larry McGoldrick award signifying 1st Place for its Sweet Potato Chorizo Chili. \u00a0Its first win was in 2019. \u00a0In 2024, its green chile cheeseburger soup finished second in the judges&#8217; choice competition. \u00a0Having judged the blind tasting at the Souper Bowl for twelve years, \u00a0I&#8217;m simply blown away by the quality of the food proffered by a &#8220;billiards joint.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_61481\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-61481\" style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-61481 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 750px; is owned by Steve Ricar and Todd Mack. \u00a0Todd, an Albuquerque native (and Del Norte graduate) is the mastermind behind the kitchen&#8217;s culinary splendor. \u00a0 He wasn&#8217;t available during our first two visits, so I asked a friend of his if Todd is classically trained. \u00a0His friend guffawed and shared &#8220;<em>just look at his belly<\/em>.&#8221; \u00a0I&#8217;m not sure what that means. \u00a0His friend told us that Todd uses no salt in his dishes, using other spices to let his cooking do the talking. \u00a0Who needs culinary training when you&#8217;ve got talent like Todd&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>Quite naturally, we had to experience what &#8220;<em>an extremely razor thin margin<\/em>&#8221; meant in such a prestigious competition as the New Mexico Green Chile Cheeseburger Challenge. \u00a0But first, we had to study the menu. \u00a0&#8220;Chalk Em Up&#8221; is what Slate Street Billiards calls its appetizers, an array of mostly anachronistic favorites such as onion rings, mozzarella cheese sticks and fried mushrooms. \u00a0&#8220;On the Felt Green Salads&#8221; offers four salads and a soup of the day. \u00a0A build-your-own burger option (nearly fifteen toppings) precedes six specialty burgers and a patty melt. \u00a0Each burger is &#8220;<em>made with local beef delivered fresh twice a week. Her Own Patty Melt<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>14 September 2022<\/strong>: Our &#8220;Chalk Em Up&#8221; choice was called <strong><em>Philly fries<\/em><\/strong> (Philly steak, queso, onions and peppers over\u00a0fries), a starter large enough to share. \u00a0Though filling and good, our druthers next time will be to have the fries sans toppings. \u00a0These fries are legitimate contenders for honors of their own. \u00a0They&#8217;re crispy on the outside and pillowy soft on the inside. \u00a0The Philly steak, onions and peppers were also quite good, but the queso diminished the overall quality of this starter. \u00a0Our experience with Phillies across the Duke City area is that white Cheddar makes the very best cheesy companion to Philly sandwiches&#8230;and probably Philly fries, too.<\/p>\n<p><strong>14 September 2022<\/strong>: The burger which came within &#8220;&#8221;<em>an extremely razor thin margin<\/em>&#8221; of winning the New Mexico State Fair&#8217;s Green Chile Cheeseburger Challenge is called the <em><strong>Spicy Southwest Burger<\/strong><\/em> (grilled jalape\u00f1os, green chile, pepper jack cheese and chipotle\u00a0mayo). \u00a0A yeasty ciabatta bun is the canvas upon which all the ingredients are nestled. \u00a0Ciabatta makes for an outstanding burger bun. \u00a0Frankly, the grilled jalape\u00f1os contributed only piquancy to the burger, on some bites completely obfuscating the other ingredients. \u00a0This is a burger which might have eclipsed that extremely thin razor thin margin without those jalape\u00f1os.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_65963\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-65963\" style=\"width: 602px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-65963 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 602px; Ribeye is known to most carnivores as the most flavorful cut of steak. \u00a0Place it side-by-side with other cuts and ribeye is likely to be voted as the favorite. \u00a0It&#8217;s a very flavorful cut of meat that fits perfectly in between buns. \u00a0With grilled onions and mushrooms, it&#8217;s a umami bomb, a meat-lovers dream. \u00a0The French fries are terrific with a crispy, coated exterior texture and pillowy insides<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_65961\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-65961\" style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-65961 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 750px;
