the photograph depicted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/culture\/2021\/12\/09\/green-eyed-afghan-girl-star-of-steve-mccurry-photography-exhibition-in-paris\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Sharbat Gula<\/strong><\/a>, a 12-year-old Afghan refugee in Pakistan during the Soviet-Afghan War.\u00a0 \u00a0Widely described as the &#8220;<em>First World&#8217;s Third World Mona Lisa<\/em>,&#8221; the image became a rallying cry for compassion among the Western world for the attrocities being committed in Afghanistan.\u00a0 CNN called it the world&#8217;s most famous photograph.\u00a0 A framed photograph of the green-eyed Afghan girl hangs prominently on one wall of Albuquerque&#8217;s Afghan House.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_70485\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-70485\" style=\"width: 850px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-70485 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 850px; Eatery<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0 Among its other predecessors is the fabled \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nmgastronome.com\/?p=284\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Gold Street Cafe<\/strong><\/a> (and its legendary honey-glazed chile bacon). \u00a0Signage on the building still reads \u201cGold Street Cafe\u201d even though (as recently pointed out to me) it\u2019s Gold Avenue, not Gold Street.\u00a0 \u00a0Visit on a weekday and you&#8217;re less likely to find on-street parking and some of the parking lots are rather pricy.<\/p>\n<p>Much deeper than it is wide, the 2,600-square-foot restaurant seats up to 50 people with table seating, stool seating and even floor seating for those who want to enjoy their meal Afghani style: crisscross with shoes off.\u00a0 Seating is more functional than it is comfortable with metal chairs offering no padding.\u00a0 In addition to the aforementioned Afghan Girl portrait, the restaurant is festooned with art and decor reflecting Afghan culture.\u00a0 It is a bright and airy space made even warmer by the hospitality and friendliness of the Hussaini family.\u00a0 If you&#8217;re unfamiliar with Afghan cuisine, they&#8217;re happy to answer all your questions and provide recommendations.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_70488\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-70488\" style=\"width: 850px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-70488 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 850px; The Afghan Kebab House offers two varieties, one stuffed with leeks and one with potatoes. Both are served with a thin green chutney.\u00a0 Texturally, the bolani is crispy and slightly chewy with a flavor that is both herbacious and fresh (maybe slightly minty).\u00a0 My Kim found it a bit too spicy for her delicate taste buds, but this fire-eating New Mexican enjoyed each morsel.<\/p>\n<p>The menu also offers two varieties of sambosas: a vegetarian sambosa and a <em><strong>beef sambosa<\/strong><\/em> described on the menu as &#8220;<em>golden-fried pastry filled with a flavorful mixture of spiced ground meat, chicken, or veg. Served with Chutney<\/em>.&#8221;\u00a0 Note that &#8220;samosa&#8221; and &#8220;sambosa&#8221; are essentially the same food item, though named slightly differently depending on where they&#8217;re served. It connected trade between Asia, India, the Mediterranean basin, and eastern Africa. It is no surprise that Afghan cuisine can see influences from all of these regions. The national dish of Afghanistan is <em><strong>Qabuli Palaw.<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0Several sources explain that&#8221; <em>before girls are married, they are taught how to make Afghan food, including this dish because they would bring shame on the family if they didn\u2019t know how to cook it<\/em>!&#8221;\u00a0 Thank goodness Ilham&#8217;s mom knows how to prepare it.\u00a0 Thank goodness, it&#8217;s on the menu.<\/p>\n<p>The Qabuli Palaw is described on the menu as &#8220;<em>Afghan signature dish made with rice, lamb shank seasoned with spices. Topped with mixture of caramelized raisins and carrots. Though Wikipedia has compiled a list of some ten-million <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_dumplings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>types of dumplings<\/strong><\/a>, mantu is one which should rise near the top of your list of dumplings to try.<\/p>\n<p>While many cultures offer rice pudding dessert dishes, perhaps none are as palate pleasing as <em><strong>sheer birinj<\/strong><\/em> named for its two primary ingredients &#8220;sheer&#8221; (milk) and birinj (rice).\u00a0\u00a0This sticky pudding dessert is commonly served in Afghanistan, Iran, and Azerbaijan, but new to us.\u00a0 It&#8217;s\u00a0 flavored with rose water and cardamom, which gives it a unique and delicious flavor.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a wonderful comfort dish and (please don&#8217;t tell my Aunt Cleo) my favorite rice pudding dish.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_70493\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-70493\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-70493 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 600px;
