While the name itself is ancient Greek, there is surprisingly\u00a0 (especially considering the easily titillated denizens of Mount Olympus) no figure in pagan Greek mythology with the name Dorothea.\u00a0 Instead, Dorothea is the name of a prominent Christian saint, one christened the patron saint of florists, gardeners, and brides.\u00a0 She is often depicted with a basket of roses and fruit.\u00a0 \u00a0The name Dorothea has variants in many different languages, including Doroth\u00e9e, Dorotea, Dorota, Dorrit, Doretta and more. It has also inspired lots of cute nicknames, including Dora, Thea, Dot, Dottie, Doree and Dodie.<\/p>\n<p>Closer to home, Dorothea is an upscale Greek restaurant which first opened its doors in August, 2024.\u00a0 \u00a0The restaurant&#8217;s website explains that Dorothea is &#8220;<em>named\u00a0in honor of Dorothea, the mother of renowned Greek restaurant mogul Nick Kapnison, our establishment celebrates her legacy of love, elegance, and culinary excellence<\/em>.&#8221;\u00a0 Nick Kapnison is probably the closest Albuquerque has seen to a Greek god&#8230;maybe the deity of dining or demiurge of deliciousness.\u00a0 He was a prolific restaurateur with such restaurants to his credit as The Coney Island, The Soda Straw, Milton\u2019s, Kap\u2019s, the original El Patron, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nmgastronome.com\/?p=5976\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Nick &amp; Jimmy\u2019s<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nmgastronome.com\/?p=43134\"><strong>Mykonos<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nmgastronome.com\/?p=426\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Yanni&#8217;s<\/strong><\/a> and others.\u00a0 Nick <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legacy.com\/us\/obituaries\/abqjournal\/name\/nick-kapnison-obituary?id=58678774\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>passed away<\/strong><\/a> on 11 June 2025 at the young age of 93, leaving a legacy of achievement.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_70905\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-70905\" style=\"width: 850px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-70905 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 850px; garden<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0 Nick&#8217;s daughter Nicole Kapnison is a prolific restaurateur in her own right.\u00a0 In an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abqjournal.com\/lifestyle\/article_129f2848-8a85-11ef-9dd8-6b0ddee96982.html#10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>interview<\/strong><\/a> with the Albuquerque Journal, she joked that Yanni&#8217;s &#8220;<em>is where I grew up and spent most of my time.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>She was almost fated to become a restaurant impressario.\u00a0 Among her most recent success stories is the fabulous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nmgastronome.com\/?p=60812\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Meraki Coffee &amp; Market<\/strong><\/a> on Eubank.\u00a0 Meraki is the product of an immensely crative transformation of an unused space at the northwest corner of the edifice which housed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nmgastronome.com\/?p=43134\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Mykonos Cafe<\/strong><\/a>, one of Albuquerque\u2019s most venerable and popular Greek restaurants for generations.<\/p>\n<p>Dorothea is located at the former home of Mykonos, not that you would recognize much of its previous occupant.\u00a0 Few vestiges of Mykonos remain.\u00a0 Even the restaurant&#8217;s popular bar was relocated to another section of the space.\u00a0 Though Mykonos was somewhat upscale compared to other Greek restaurants in the city, Dorothea has upped the ante.\u00a0 On the restaurant&#8217;s signage, Dorothea prefaces &#8220;Fine Greek,&#8221; an indication that you&#8217;re in not just for outstanding food, but a superb experience.\u00a0 That is reinforced on the website which explains Dorothea is &#8220;w<em>here culinary tradition meets modern elegance. When our server asked how my Kim wanted the chop prepared, my Kim asked for it to be at the &#8220;medium&#8221; degree of doneness. It arrived at our table at a dictionary-definition-perfect medium degree of doneness with plenty of moistness and just a hint of pink. Greek seasonings penetrated deeply into as tender a cut of pork as we\u2019ve ever had, imbuing the chop with luscious flavors. It was a paragon of porcine perfection. The pork chop is served with one side.\u00a0 My Kim chose lobster mashed potatoes.\u00a0 You might think the bits of lobster would get lost among all those rich, buttery mashed potatoes, but they didn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_70910\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-70910\" style=\"width: 850px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-70910 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 850px;
