Sichuan peppercorns\u00a0 are not spicy. The heat in Sichuan cuisine comes from <em>la\u00a0<\/em>&#8211; or spicy. It&#8217;s a real hole in the wall and really authentic. They don&#8217;t seem to be getting a lot of business, for that reason and because of their location, I think. But the couple who owns it are super nice. It&#8217;s just the two of them working there. I really can&#8217;t recommend it enough. I&#8217;ve been so disappointed with the Chinese food here, but this place is actually good<\/em>.&#8221;\u00a0 \u00a0Hmm, &#8220;<em>really authentc, comparable to Boston, actually good<\/em>.&#8221;\u00a0 All of those superlatives intrigued me, but it was this sentence that really got my juices going: &#8220;<em>The chef is Sichuanese.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_77149\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-77149\" style=\"width: 850px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-77149 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 850px; (Ryan Chen), a viral social media impersonator known for mimicking Donald Trump\u2019s mannerisms, on food-focused content.\u00a0 This video depicts them enjoying Chongqing hot pot with so many chilies and peppercorns that even Satan would beg for water.\u00a0 Chongquing, by the way, is not within the Sichuan provinence but has strong cultural and culinary ties with the Sicuan region.<\/p>\n<p>Perusing the menu, we espied several dishes which screamed &#8220;authentic.&#8221;\u00a0 \u00a0Save for orange chicken, Mongolian beef, chicken chow mein and a few other items, the menu didn&#8217;t have the lacquered sweet-and-sour dishes Chinese Trump might describe as &#8220;<em>round-eye Chinese food<\/em>.&#8221;\u00a0 Bill and I appreciated that though even we might have a bit of trepidation (Bill more than me) about ordering spicy braised pork trotters, boiled spicy bullfrog (or dry pot bullfrog) and pork intestine and tofu casserole.\u00a0 Yes, it&#8217;s that type of Chinese restaurant&#8211;the type I love.\u00a0 Our server spoke almost no English, but pointed enthusiastically at menu items she recommended.\u00a0 When we asked a question about a menu item, she queried her smart phone but the results it returned basically didn&#8217;t help.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_77150\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-77150\" style=\"width: 850px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-77150 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 850px; after being long known as the &#8220;War Zone.&#8221;\u00a0 This Fei&#8217;s Cafe is not to be mistaken for the Fei&#8217;s Cafe in the University area.\u00a0 That restaurant shuttered its doors several years ago.<\/p>\n<p>The first of our four entrees to arrive was <em><strong>Dandan Noodles<\/strong><\/em>, a Sichuan dish traditionally served by street vendors who carried them on poles across their shoulders (dan dan).\u00a0 This spicy noodle dish is normally tossed in a sauce of chili oil, Sichuan peppercorns and preserved vegetables.\u00a0 The dandan noodles delivered to our table resembled a Vietnamese vermicelli noodle dish in that topping a tangle of noodles were fresh carrots and cucumbers along with ground beef.\u00a0 \u00a0We didn&#8217;t discern any of the numbing Sichuan peppercorns we both love.\u00a0 Nor did our tongues burn beautifully from chilis.\u00a0 The noodles and broth were slurp worthy.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_77151\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-77151\" style=\"width: 850px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-77151 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 850px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 850\/684;border: 4px solid black; margin-top: 3px; margin-bottom: 3px;\" data-src=\"https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/FeisCafe06.png?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"850\" height=\"684\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/FeisCafe06.png?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1 640w, https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/FeisCafe06-300x241.png?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1 300w, https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/FeisCafe06-150x121.png?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1 150w, https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/FeisCafe06.png?size=510x410&lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1 510w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-77151\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Shrimp and Corn<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Our server (whom we surmise was the owner) was very enthusiastic about the <em><strong>Kung Pao chicken<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 Bill resisted her overtures, but she gave me a pleading look that seemed to say &#8220;<em>order this, please<\/em>.&#8221;\u00a0 I did.\u00a0 As with the dandan noodles, Kung Pao chicken has its genesis in the Sichuan province.\u00a0 Made well (authentically), it offers a complex blend of sweet, sour and savory flavors with a signature numbing mala from those Sichuan peppercorns and chilis.\u00a0 \u00a0Americanized versions (can you say Panda Express) are less spicy and sweeter.\u00a0 At first browse, the dish placed in front of us looked like Kung Pao chicken with the characteristic sliced chicken, peanuts, vegetables and chili peppers.\u00a0 Unless you actually eat the chili peppers, you won&#8217;t discern much heat from this dish.\u00a0 It was sweet, savory and vinegary.\u00a0 Not bad, but not what we expected.<\/p>\n<p>Among the unique menu items was <em><strong>egg and corn stir fry with shrimp<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t recall having seen this item on the menu of any other Chinese restaurant in New Mexico, but apparently it&#8217;s not uncommon in China.\u00a0 Characteristically Sichuan-style egg and corn stir fry includes Sichuan peppercorns as well as garlic and (or) ginger for the numbing kick Bill and I love.\u00a0 This dish combines fluffy eggs which adhere to the corn niblets.\u00a0 Fei&#8217;s version includes both stir-fried shrimp and fried shrimp pieces.\u00a0 Surprisingly, this may have been our favorite of the four dishes we shared.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_77152\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-77152\" style=\"width: 850px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-77152 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 850px;
