the Day of the Dead.\u00a0\u00a0During this Mexican holiday, the profusion of skeletons of all sizes performing day-to-day activities signifies the return to this world of the dead who remain who they were when they lived, doing what they did. \u00a0For example, skeletal figures depicted on the artwork at Calavida Continue would have been party animals when they graced this earthly plane. \u00a0Therefore in death, they remain party animals&#8211;eating, drinking and being merry.\u00a0 \u00a0At Calavida, the party animals of a past life mingle with party animals of today in a milieu that&#8217;s the antithesis of a morgue or mortuary.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_79618\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-79618\" style=\"width: 850px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-79618 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 850px; Calavida &#8220;<em>toasts to the past, celebrates the present, and crafts liquid stories for the future<\/em>.&#8221;\u00a0 Calavida&#8217;s website boasts that &#8220;<em>every sip and bite is a spirited celebration of life after bland<\/em>.&#8221;\u00a0 If you appreciate the collection of catchprhases and slogans,\u00a0 you&#8217;ll probably get into the spirit of things once you step into the lively cantina.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_79619\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-79619\" style=\"width: 850px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-79619 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 850px; Calavida produced a small amount of beer at its original location (inside the Indoor Soccer Arena near Paseo Del Norte and Jefferson).\u00a0 \u00a0 At its new location, Calavida will ramp up though it won&#8217;t be entering packaging-and-distribution market.\u00a0 If you imbibe adult beverages, you should enjoy the Dark Side Brew Crew&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/nmdarksidebrewcrew.com\/2025\/10\/21\/things-are-looking-up-at-calavida-cantina-with-new-brewing-system-and-more\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>terrific review<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_79620\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-79620\" style=\"width: 850px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-79620 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 850px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 850\/709;border: 4px solid black; margin-top: 3px; margin-bottom: 3px;\" data-src=\"https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Calavida04.png?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"850\" height=\"709\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Calavida04.png?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1 640w, https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Calavida04-300x250.png?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1 300w, https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Calavida04-150x125.png?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1 150w, https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Calavida04.png?size=510x425&lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1 510w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-79620\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chips and Salsa (Con Queso Not Pictured)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In terms of configuration, there aren&#8217;t significant changes from the Boxing Bear days.\u00a0 An expansive patio allows for al fresco dining (and drinking) under New Mexico&#8217;s glorious skies.\u00a0 Step into the edifice and you&#8217;ll espy a counter where you can place your order.\u00a0 If you need time to study the menu, you can take it with you to a vacant table and a server will come by later to take your order.\u00a0 If music loud enough to raise the dead is one of the many things you enjoy about cantinas, you&#8217;ll appreciate the raised stage in which live bands perform.\u00a0 You may not be able to enjoy conversations, but music-lovers will enjoy the thrumming of bass.\u00a0 Where you&#8217;ll note the most significant changes is in the artwork festooning the walls.\u00a0 Thematically, it celebrates the party animals with us only in spirit.<\/p>\n<p>The food menu includes a number of New Mexican and Mexican dishes (although the Dark Side Brew indicated there were Spanish items on the menu) with which most diners will be familiar.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not an overly ambitious menu, but it&#8217;s a good bar menu for multi-taskers (eating and drinking).\u00a0 Appetizers include such shareable starters as boneless wings, crunch pickles, &#8220;Diablo Inferno Curds,&#8221; and pozole (with a pinch of cumin).\u00a0 Main Courses are somewhat more substantial.\u00a0 They include a &#8220;Calavida Crunch Wrap,&#8221; classic handheld burritos stuffed with beans, rice, onion, cilantro, cheese and your choice of protein (pollo, chicharrones, carne asada, birria and sofritas).\u00a0 Signature tacos served on grilled corn tortillas and topped with fresh ingredients are available as are a la carte tacos.\u00a0 There are even three desserts on the menu.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_79623\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-79623\" style=\"width: 850px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-79623 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 850px; trio: salsa, guacamole and green chile queso).\u00a0 Because their piquancy prohibits her enjoyment of salsa, my Kim makes it clear the guacamole is all hers.\u00a0 Sometimes she can also indulge in the con queso provided it&#8217;s not especially fiery.\u00a0 When it comes to fiery, you can&#8217;t beat the salsa.\u00a0 It&#8217;s got a very potent bite.\u00a0 The con queso wasn&#8217;t especially piquant and was somewhat on the thin, runny side.\u00a0 Chips are thin, crispy with some being too big to polish off in one bite (unless you&#8217;ve got an unlocked jaw like Food Network star Guy Fieri).<\/p>\n<p>We all know burritos are shaped like a sealed, closed-ended cylinder. Not in all cases. Calavida offers a unique entree called a &#8220;<em><strong>calavida crunch wrap<\/strong><\/em>&#8221; which is essentially a burrito in a grilled hexagon shape.\u00a0 A Google search reminded me that &#8220;Crunchwrap&#8221; is registered trademark of Taco Bell (which I would never visit).\u00a0 Calavida&#8217;s menu spells it as two words: &#8220;Crunch Wrap.&#8221;\u00a0 I don&#8217;t know enough about trademark law to know if this will protect Calavida from a lawsuit, but I do know burritos&#8230;and this is a good one.\u00a0 It&#8217;s packed with beans, rice, cheese, guacamole, sour cream, fried tortilla strips and\u00a0 your choice of protein.\u00a0 The crunch wrap is served with two fiery salsas.\u00a0 The hexaganol shape of this burrito won&#8217;t detract from your enjoyment.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a very good burrito even sans New Mexican chile.\u00a0 The crunchy fried tortilla strips are a textural delight.\u00a0 Dip the crunch wrap into salsa if you believe pain is a flavor and you love it that way (I do).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_79621\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-79621\" style=\"width: 698px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-79621 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 698px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 698\/800;border: 4px solid black; margin-top: 3px; margin-bottom: 3px;\" data-src=\"https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Calavida05.png?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"698\" height=\"800\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Calavida05.png?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1 558w, https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Calavida05-262x300.png?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1 262w, https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Calavida05-131x150.png?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1 131w, https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Calavida05.png?size=418x479&lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1 418w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 698px) 100vw, 698px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-79621\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Quesadilla With Carne Asada<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Our order was delivered just as the band started the first of several loud songs.\u00a0 We had hoped to engage the chefs in conversation, but couldn&#8217;t make ourselves heard, nor could we hear him.\u00a0 We did hear just enough to learn the chef previously worked at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nmgastronome.com\/?p=57919\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Sobremesa Restaurant and Brewery<\/strong><\/a> (which closed in 2025).\u00a0 I don&#8217;t remember if Sobremesa&#8217;s menu included quesadillas, but suspect that may be where the chef cut his teeth on this snack-slash-entree which is available with your choice of protein.\u00a0 My Kim&#8217;s choice, as usual, was carne asada.\u00a0 On the inner part of a grilled tortilla, we found a generous amount of carne asada melted with melted cheese, but there was little of both on the outer edges which were actually crispy.<\/p>\n<p>The a la carte taco menu features grilled corn tortillas served with your choice of protein, red and green salsa, onion, cilantro, and lime. Add a side of beans and rice to any tacos for a pittance.\u00a0 My choice was a <em><strong>birria taco<\/strong><\/em> which also came with a small ramekin of consomme.\u00a0 \u00a0As birria tacos go in this town, this one was below average. Though it was moist and generously packed with beef, it would have benefitted from aromatics.\u00a0 In Albuquerque, restaurants had better have a good birria taco or perhaps they shouldn&#8217;t offer it.\u00a0 The side of beans (with shredded cheese) was better though because they arrived lukewarm, it wasn&#8217;t long before they cooled off.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dictionary.com\/culture\/slang\/cool-beans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Cool beans<\/strong><\/a> may be a popular expression, but cool beans aren&#8217;t very good to eat.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_79622\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-79622\" style=\"width: 850px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-79622 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 850px;
