As celebrity chef Mario Batali says, &#8220;it&#8217;s not all about food, it&#8217;s about memories.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 497px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 497px; font-family: Verdana;\">Americans are a nostalgic people.\u00a0 We long for the good old days and don our rose-colored glasses when we reminisce about the sights, sounds and memories of our past.\u00a0 Though we can&#8217;t journey back to those bygone eras which seem more sweet and innocent than perhaps they really were, we can recreate those experiences when we visit the vintage restaurants we loved in our youth and cherish in our adulthood. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">This fact wasn&#8217;t lost on <a title=\"Cooking With The Jamisons\" href=\"http:\/\/cookingwiththejamisons.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cheryl Alters Jamison<\/a>, the scintillating culinary liaison for the New Mexico Tourism Department.\u00a0 When contemplating how to follow up the wildly successful <a title=\"New Mexico Green Chile Cheeseburger Trail\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nmgastronome.com\/?p=6085\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New Mexico Green Chile Cheeseburger Trail<\/a>, Cheryl figured why not honor New Mexico&#8217;s culinary treasures&#8211;those independent mom and pop restaurants which have stood the test of time to become beloved institutions in their neighborhoods and beyond.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">That inspiration came as she attended the <a title=\"James Beard Foundation Awards\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jamesbeard.org\/?q=node\/99\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">James Beard Foundation<\/a> awards celebration in New York City in which <a title=\"Mary &amp; Tito's\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nmgastronome.com\/?p=331\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mary &amp; Tito&#8217;s<\/a> was recognized as an <a title=\"James Beard Foundation: America's Classic Award\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jamesbeard.org\/index.php?q=james_beard_awards_americas_classics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">America&#8217;s Classic<\/a>, the Foundation&#8217;s award for locally-owned restaurants which have distinguished themselves by their timeless appeal.\u00a0 Mary &amp; Tito&#8217;s is the third New Mexico restaurant honored with this award, following <a title=\"Cafe Pasqual\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nmgastronome.com\/?p=83\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cafe Pasqual<\/a> and <a title=\"The Shed\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nmgastronome.com\/?p=117\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Shed<\/a>, both from Santa Fe, as honorees.\u00a0 A culinary treasure herself, Cheryl reasoned that New Mexico is rich with fabulous family-owned restaurants visitors and residents should know about.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 506px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 506px; Tito&#8217;s, a James Beard award-winning timeless classic<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">The New Mexico Tourism Department solicited input statewide and received dozens of nominations from loyal patrons, restaurant owners, chefs, cooks and waitstaff.\u00a0 Cheryl then convened a team of culinary experts&#8211;the brilliant Kate Manchester, publisher of <a title=\"Edible Santa Fe\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ediblecommunities.com\/santafe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Edible Santa Fe<\/a>; Martin Leger, the advertising manager for the Tourism Department; and this humble blogger&#8211;to validate that the nominees met the criteria and to add our own qualifying choices. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">We painstakingly sifted through the list of nominated restaurants, selecting only those rare and precious family owned- and operated gems operating continuously since at least December 31st, 1969.\u00a0 The end-result is a\u00a0 comprehensive list of more than seventy culinary treasures, all of which are profiled on the New Mexico Tourism Department&#8217;s <a title=\"New Mexico Tourism Department: Culinary Treasures\" href=\"http:\/\/www.newmexico.org\/culinarytreasures\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Web site<\/a>.\u00a0 The Web site also includes the <a title=\"New Mexico Culinary Trails Map\" href=\"http:\/\/www.newmexico.org\/culinarytreasures\/treasuremap.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">culinary trail map<\/a> (also posted below), an interactive guide to the culinary treasures.\u00a0 Both are designed to whet your appetite and invite you to create new memories of new old soon-to-be favorites.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">The list of New Mexico&#8217;s culinary treasures includes many restaurants profiled on this blog as well as others I&#8217;ll be visiting in the future.\u00a0 The &#8220;New Mexico Culinary Treasures&#8221;
