font-family: Verdana;\">America&#8217;s oldest and longest continuously used &#8220;highway,&#8221; El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, (Spanish for the Royal Road of the Interior Land) includes a 404 mile stretch that bisects much of the Land of Enchantment\u00a0 from south to north.\u00a0 A large portion of that stretch is barren and desolate, one especially treacherous and dry section even designated by the Spanish conquistadores as the Jornada del Muerto, Spanish for &#8220;route of the dead man.&#8221;\u00a0 For nearly 400 years&#8211;from 1598\u00a0 (more than two decades before the Mayflower&#8217;s storied landing) to 1882&#8211;El Camino Real served as both a trade route and as the route taken by settlers and conquerors alike.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">For four centuries, thousands of intrepid Spanish and Mexican colonists, conquering warriors and evangelizing Franciscan priests and friars alike traversed the 1,600 mile route from Mexico City as far as San Juan Pueblo, New Mexico, many founding and settling villages along the route.\u00a0 The direct descendants of these bold-spirited pioneers can be found living in those villages and cities today.\u00a0 Vestiges of the unique culture, language, music, legends and faith founded by their ancestors exist into the 21st century.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9372\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9372\" style=\"width: 444px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/ElCamino02.jpg?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9372 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 444px; font-family: Verdana;\">Spanish explorer Don Juan de O\u00f1ate, who today is both revered and reviled, led the very first expedition of colonists into New Mexico.\u00a0 Not far from the terminus of the Jornada del Muerto, O\u00f1ate&#8217;s party was aided by the Piro-speaking people of the Teypana Pueblo.\u00a0 O\u00f1ate named the site Socorro, Spanish for &#8220;to give succor&#8221; or &#8220;to give aid.&#8221;\u00a0 Socorro is today New Mexico&#8217;s second oldest inhabited community, a city proudly linked to its storied past and historical traditions while at the cutting edge of 21st century technologies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">For years Socorro has been regarded as a stopping point on the way to somewhere else.\u00a0 Tourists have long stopped in Socorro to refuel en route to El Bosque del Apache, Magdalena, the Very Large Array (VLA) and other points north, south, east and west of the city.\u00a0 Socorro has been making a concerted effort to change the perception of Socorro as solely a city on the way elsewhere by showcasing all that is available&#8211;for locals and tourists alike&#8211;in this city of approximately 9,000 residents.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9376\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9376\" style=\"width: 444px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/ElCamino06.jpg?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9376 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 444px; font-family: Verdana;\">Leading that charge is the <a title=\"Socorro County Chamber of Commerce\" href=\"http:\/\/www.socorro-nm.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Socorro County Chamber of Commerce<\/a> which wisely secured the services of my friend Susan Wisdom as their web designer.\u00a0 Susan has not only made the Chamber&#8217;s Web site the online home for all of its <a title=\"Socorro County Chamber of Commerce Members\" href=\"http:\/\/www.socorro-nm.com\/Member%20Web%20Pages.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">members<\/a>, she has created a valuable resource for all prospective visitors.\u00a0 A longtime Socorro resident, Susan has the ambassadorial qualities needed by a city aspiring to attract visitors and keep locals informed.\u00a0 She&#8217;s personable, effusive&#8230;and she really knows the area&#8217;s restaurants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Perhaps her favorite is the aptly named <a title=\"El Camino Family Restaurant in Socorro\" href=\"http:\/\/www.socorro-nm.com\/elcamino.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">El Camino Family Restaurant<\/a>, a true New Mexico culinary classic which opened in the early summer of 1963.\u00a0 El Camino is a city institution, the perennial\u00a0 choice for best coffee shop and best breakfast in annual newspaper contests voted on by Socorro residents. It has long been a haven for New Mexico Institute of Technology students who drink pots of\u00a0 the restaurant&#8217;s coffee as they study into the wee hours.\u00a0 T<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">he restaurant is open 24 hours a day and serves breakfast at all hours.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9373\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9373\" style=\"width: 444px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/ElCamino03.jpg?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9373 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 444px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 444\/321;border: 4px solid black; margin-top: 3px; margin-bottom: 3px;\" title=\"ElCamino03\" data-src=\"https:\/\/b4385483.smushcdn.com\/4385483\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/ElCamino03.jpg?lossy=2&strip=1&webp=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"444\" height=\"321\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 444px) 100vw, 444px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9373\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">SW Omelet: Cheese, green chili, sausage, and mushroom<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">Breakfast is what Susan knows best though she&#8217;s intimately acquainted with the entire menu, having designed it herself for family friend and restaurant owner Mehrdad Moradi.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a comprehensive menu serving traditional American and Mexican food, sandwiches, burgers, steaks, seafood, appetizers and even an omelet named for Susan.\u00a0 That omelet is called the &#8220;<em>SW Omelet<\/em>,&#8221; which diners assume stands for &#8220;Southwest.&#8221;\u00a0 Instead, &#8220;SW&#8221; stands for Susan&#8217;s initials, representing &#8220;Susan Wisdom.&#8221;\u00a0 Susan special ordered this omelet so often, the restaurant put it on the menu.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">Our inaugural visit to El Camino was at the wee hour of 8AM for the breakfast segment of a &#8220;Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner&#8221; article for <a title=\"New Mexico Magazine\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nmmagazine.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New Mexico Magazine<\/a>. The restaurant&#8217;s omelets are made with three eggs and are served with hash browns and toast. Cheese can be added to any omelet for a pittance.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">The SW Omelet is engorged with sausage, cheese and mushrooms then topped with green chili (sic). It&#8217;s no wonder this is my friend Susan&#8217;s favorite breakfast entree. \u00a0 It&#8217;s certainly all that eggs are cracked up to be!
